What's Your Duke Nukem?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-11-11 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
What is a book/movie/show/game that was always in "development" but took forever to come out OR has not come out yet (even though the creators say it is still totally in production?

Mine is The Last Guardian (and why I thought of this). After rewatching the trailer (and showing it to my dismayed sister), I decided to look up any recent info on it. Five years later and Sony says it is still in development. But considering much of the staff (including Ueda) have left, my hopes are not very high for this game. Which is a shame considering how gorgeous Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were.

The Arrested Development movie that turned into Season 4. How many years was it in between? At least it finally came out, I guess. I'm sure there's more, considering how often I waited around for manga/anime when I was younger.

I need to finish watching that season. I watched the first...3 I think and then just stopped. Was it good?

Damn, looking at the Wiki page, the rights to that has been thrown around a lot. I wonder what is holding studios back from making it.

Is that STILL not out? I swear, I remember reading about that in HS almost four years ago at this point.

Anyway....who knows how long an Artemis Fowl movie will languish in the bowls of Disney's Live Action.

No it isn't. :( Was there not already an Artemis Fowl movie? There have been so many of that type. If you are lucky, it will come out after the hype is over so it is not churned out with a terrible script *cough*Thegiver*cough*

The third volume of The Umbrella Academy comics. Damn it, Gerard, I know you've had a full plate but you announced "Hotel Oblivion" was coming in 2009 and now it's still 'in development!' Don't play me like that!

The only option is to only ever read/watch things that are already complete. Because creators like to play with out hearts. I see a fourth one is also supposedly in development.

The first thing I thought of when I read 'always in development' was The Last Guardian, haha. I don't think it'll ever see the light of day either. Shame.

Kind of feels that way for the Assassin's Creed movie, which will likely suck but has Michael Fassbender attached to it. I will probably watch it regardless if it ever gets a release.

Those were my thoughts on the movie as well! "Hmmm. This is probably gonna suck. But maybe Fassbender will take off his shirt. I'll be there."

The Yiddish Policemen's Union. Oh my god, Chabon in the hands of the Coen bros = YES PLEASE!! But as far as I know, there isn't even a script yet (and that begs the question of what language said script should be in...).

While I think the novel's going to go on to be regarded an enduring classic of the decade, I think the time for a movie while it's still topical is ticking rapidly. If it's not in the next 3-4 years while Adrien Brody can still play Landsman, it might have to wait until 2035 when everything from the mid-2000s is reexamined and re-appreciated with heavy nostalgia.

Aw, reading the quote from Chabon about it makes him seem like he is so sad the Coen brothers moved on. :(

"In the fall of 2012, however, Chabon told Mother Jones that "the Coen brothers wrote a draft of a script and then they seemed to move on," and that the film rights had "lapsed back to me.""

The Unicorn Chronicles by Bruce Coville. Book 1 came out in 1994, book 2 in 1999, book 3 in 2008, and book 4 in 2010. I had a friend in early 2000 who was desperately waiting for book 3. I never found out whether she read it when it came out.

Reboot was apparently going to have a new movie, a webcomic, and other noise, but that is totally never happening.

And does Mother 3 kind of count? It was originally supposed to have been for N64, but that was an awful console to plan anything on, so it ended up coming out on GBA. Or what about Earthbound? It only took forever for Nintendo to get the legal finagling over with to get it on virtual console (albeit, only wiiU iirc).

Also, Half Life 3 obviously.

The actual Duke Nukem.

I've given up on Half-Life 3. I'm just waiting on Doom 4 now.

Also if Bolt Thrower are serious about that supposed 9th album of theirs I'd love to hear it already.

The Republic of Thieves. It finally came out last autumn, but it was a little over six years between it and the second book in the series (after only a one year gap between the first two books).

Book four's been pushed back once already, too, and I'm just hoping it doesn't end up being another half-dozen year wait.

The Wonder Woman movie. I'll believe it's actually going to happen when I see it in a theater.

There's been rumors of a live-action Justice League movie, off and on, for FOREVER. I'll believe it when I see it, and I will drag my expectations (initially high from loving the comics) waaaaaay down because The Management are all "happiness is boring real men write angst all fridging all the time NO JOKES"

The Neuromancer movie. Keeps getting picked up/dropped, picked up/dropped.

I would have said The Last Guardian, too, but the developer's comments from a couple years back when asked if they would consider a female protagonist ("we couldn't do that because girls can't climb things!") left a sour taste in my mouth that is dampening my excitement about it to this day.
