Angel Trees

(Anonymous) 2014-11-11 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
In lieu of doing Reddit Secret Santa this year, I wanted instead to do 2-3 of those Angel tree things. Where you pick an angel off a tree and buy the kid on it gifts of what they ask for. But a coworker told me that the Salvation Army (or whoever is in charge) takes what gifts they like from the donations and that the kid who you buy for doesn't get the actual gifts they pick out but the organization distributes them as they see fit.

Does anyone know if this is true? And if so, can anyone suggest alternative things I can do for the holidays? I'd like to help families with children if possible.

I don't know if that's true but if you really want to make sure your gifts go towards families, I have a few suggestions. Try the local churches, I know they run toy drives this time of year but you might be able to see how they run theirs and if there's a way to donate to specific families in need. Another option might be to contact the local domestic violence or homeless shelter and see what they might need. My local newspaper runs a holiday drive where they feature stories about different people in different life situations and then puts a little wish list at the end of each article. Try seeing if your newspaper runs a holiday drive. (I read these every year and sometimes the children ask for toys, other times they ask for new winter coats or boots)

Good luck and I hope you're able to find a way to help someone.

Pretty sure all the gift donations are organized by type and then volunteers "shop" from the mass of donations. So, if you buy a skateboard for Little Johnny, and I buy one for Little Betty, they'll each get a skateboard, but but maybe Johnny will get the one I bought and Betty will get the one you bought.

It says " Each tree is adorned with angel tags containing an angel's age, gender, clothing sizes and gift wishes." So it's not like they're interchangeable gifts or anything. It seems that if someone takes an kid's wishlist and never returns it/brings any toys, they kind of redistribute so everyone can get something, but things that are gendered (like a skirt or makeup) or specific sizes or whatever couldn't just be handed off to anyone

Just don't go through the Salvation Army to do this - they're a pretty horrible organization. See if you can find a more local organization.

DA, but could you elaborate on that?
