Well, Scully's suits were all tailored, and cosplayers are probably putting together her outfits from retail stores. It's amazing how hard it can be to find an over-the-knee pencil skirt from an affordable source when it's not en vogue (and I consider "expensive" to start at Urban Outfitters).

For example, no matter what the season, if I walk into Forever 21 looking for a dress, and find one that fits perfectly, it will always be too short and almost always have a neck that plunges way too far.

If you want cheap business wear, hit the clearance rack at Macy's. I've gotten beautiful pencil skirts there (formal, lined) for $20 or less.

Thanks for posting that. I have a mighty need for work-wear and will be checking them out.

Check out New York and Company for good office wear. I got a bunch of skirts from there and they all fall way below the knee for me (I'm also 5'-2" but they are still long on me). Both Macys and New York and Company run great sales.

H&M is really good for basics like blouses and blazers. Not sure about the skirt lengths though, I haven't been there in a while.

I bought a few things from H&M several years ago. The sizes are always either too small or too large.

It's incredibly difficult to find skirts that aren't either above the knee or nearly floor length if you want to get them at anything resembling a reasonable price. (Reasonable here meaning "less than $100".)

Which is incredibly annoying both for cosplay purposes, and for finding a fucking skirt to wear in winter purposes.

I hear you on the winter purposes. I don't wear pants (my butt and thighs are just the weirdest shape, I've yet to find any pants that aren't uncomfortable), and winter wind is really hard on a skirt. If you live in a moderate climate, I strongly suggest sweater tights. I started buying them last winter at Target and they are my "holy crap if this wasn't California I'd actually call this freezing" standby. Those tights are so warm you can wear a miniskirt with them.

Walmart's George line has a lined below the kneecap pencil skirt in 5 colors for $8, including black and navy blue.

Not to mention that 'midi-length' is way in this fall.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's because you don't get office clothes from places like Forever 21.

Actually I have several separates from F21 that work for, well, work. Shirts, some skirts that aren't pencil (or sometimes I just buy a larger size and pin it so it falls right), tights, that kind of thing. The jewelry can pretty nice too, for cheapie stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the store name itself would seem to indicate that.

Do you know how many costumes there are out there that aren't available at all? Somehow, people still manage to wear them. You know why? Because they make them.

And it wouldn't be anywhere near as hard to make a Scully-appropriate skirt as it would be to make most of the other costumes out there. Get an ankle-length skirt, chop it, hem it. Easy as fucking shit.

Don't make excuses for lazy asses.

You forgot the first step: learn to sew

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 07:17 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Fortunately, sewing a hem is fairly straightforward even if you're just learning to sew. You wouldn't expect something that looks professional, of course, but it'll do for cosplay... and incidentally learning to sew if you want to cosplay is also a good idea.

Or, you know, walk into a thrift shop, they have loads of unfashionable clothes. That's where I get most of the clothes I butcher for cosplay.
