Eh, I think that's fair. It's just such an iconic outfit to me. Get the details right!

Yeah, and I don't see it as slut-shaming, but as acknowledging what the character would feel comfortable in. There's nothing wrong with short skirts, but they're not for everyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Thank goddness that cosplayer is wearing dark clothes and has red hair because otherwise she would blend perfectly with the background. Like a flounder or a chameleon. In fact, for a second there I missed her legs.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
That kind of sounds like Scully with X-Files cinematography. :P

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Skirts were a different length back then. You are making a fair criticism, but I also understand why the cosplayer changed the length to some thing more modern.

It's not really a slut thing, either way.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Covering your knees in a government job is not remotely retro. If a real G-Woman nowadays went around in short (by which I mean, above the knee) skirts she wouldn't keep her job long.

No. Formal business suits for women still fall below the knee. You could get shorter skirts back then as well.

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-11-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. If I came in to work with a skirt that short my boss would tell me to go home and change. Some suits may have skirts that fall above the knee, but not that many and not by that much.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I would never wear an above knee skirt for job interviews and the office work that I do. Maybe I'm just more formal, but I don't think it's really an 'item of its time'.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Why on earth do you understand a cosplayer doing something to a costume that is incorrect?

It doesn't matter if it's more "modern." Scully didn't exist in the year 2014. Scully existed in the '90s. If you're cosplaying a character from the '90s, then you should dress like it's the '90s (you should dress like the character, period).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Why does that matter? She's cosplaying a character who was in a show in the mid 90s, not a character who's in the FBI right this minute. If someone were cosplaying Steve Rogers from the Marvel movies, they'd use the military uniform of his time period, not the modern army uniform men wear today.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Scully's suits were all tailored, and cosplayers are probably putting together her outfits from retail stores. It's amazing how hard it can be to find an over-the-knee pencil skirt from an affordable source when it's not en vogue (and I consider "expensive" to start at Urban Outfitters).

For example, no matter what the season, if I walk into Forever 21 looking for a dress, and find one that fits perfectly, it will always be too short and almost always have a neck that plunges way too far.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
If you want cheap business wear, hit the clearance rack at Macy's. I've gotten beautiful pencil skirts there (formal, lined) for $20 or less.

She did more in the later seasons, so just call the cosplay "later season Scully".

Also, if you're tall(er than Scully) it can be really hard to get a knee-length skirt. I'm 5'8", so not super tall, and everything business-like is either calf-length, or mid-thigh. Very frustrating! Mostly I just wear pants instead.

Yeah, that's not slut shaming OP, it's just wanting the details right, I get you. That actually would have been an amazing spot-on cosplay if she had the longer skirt!

Well to me that's an amazing cosplay regardless (What a gorgeous woman and a cool outfit!), but I don't see it as 'slut-shaming'. You want everything exact. (Which is no crime! I wouldn't have noticed had you not pointed it out though, so I don't really mind.)

I can't remember how long Scully's skirts were but I can understand why it'd be a niggling point with a cosplay, either way I love the cosplay there, very nicely done.
cloud_riven: Bill from Pokemon side-eying to the left! Judging you! (*animu sweatdrop*)

[personal profile] cloud_riven 2014-11-12 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I just realised that I didn't often pay attention to or remember much about Scully's lower half. I had no idea she wore a pencil skirt, much less how long it was. /badfan

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 03:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is as good a place as any to complain about a Scully wardrobe/prop problem from the show. In the first couple seasons, there was this weird sexist thing with Scully's armament. Whenever she pulled a gun, it'd be a little thing like a Walther PPK. (Fuckin' .380 round. Yeesh.) Now, yes, she's a small woman, but that doesn't get her out of FBI requirements, which at that time meant a Sig-Sauer in 9mm or .40. They fixed this in later seasons, and I don't recall anyone going "Gosh, how can such a little woman handle a big handgun like that? Shouldn't she get a man to help her?" which indicates to me that giving her a little girly gun in the first place was just plain sexist and stupid.

Please tell me I'm not the only one bothered by that?

The comments to this secret make me think that most FS people don't do or understand cosplay.

Eh, little details are important, especially in fairly minimalist cosplay like this. I don't blame you.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 06:10 am (UTC)(link)
first thing I thought when I saw the photo: skirt's too short

(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
It's fair to comment on the accuracy of someone's costume. That also includes people who make costumes that cover more in most cases (though it's understandable for some.)

That said, I've found it surprisingly difficult to find cheaper skirts that fall below the knee, so if someone can't sew a seemingly simple costume could get expensive. That's just my experience though.
