Video games

I'm thinking of getting into playing video games. Does anyone have advice on what console to get, and stuff?

Depends on what you like to play.

I still love the XBox 360 to bits.

As for portable consoles, both DS and PS Vita are good but they ave very different games, so again it depends on your taste.

Well what kinds of things do you like normally?

But as a rec, a Nintendo handheld is probably a good start. There's a good variety and most of the games tend to be casual enough for most people to get.

Do you have a PC that runs fairly well? If so, there are a lot of games available for that medium. Especially if you are just getting started, you may want to find out what kinds of game you like before picking a console, since they can often be expensive.

I agree, and I say this as someone who has done wayyyyy more console gaming than PC gaming. PC games are a good place to start since there's such a massive backlog. If you have a decent PC you'll be able to play a ton of older games, possibly newer ones too, and you can always upgrade if you want. (Though of course, that's expensive.)

The thing about consoles is that they aren't backwards compatible these days. :(

BTW, this site might be helpful. http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

There are plenty of newer games for modest hardware because PC/portable synergy is a big growth market.

That makes sense; most people own a PC even if they don't use it for gaming. It's good business to have a low threshold so that people who might not normally play a game (or who don't have the cash to upgrade or buy a new computer) have the option.

True, and a big market for gaming right now is, "what can I put on my phone/tablet to keep my kid entertained on that long drive."

God, yea, my brother has a billion games on his iPad to entertain his kids. I'm sure most parents do the same in this day and age.

Of course PC gaming is different since it isn't on the go, but I don't doubt that kids brought up gaming on phones and tablets might move on to PC's eventually. It's a start.

Came here to post this. There's 30+ years' worth of games, let alone emulation for older (PS2 and earlier) consoles.

If you've never played any video games honestly I would start with PC. Get a Steam account and get some free/cheap ones.

IF you have a decent (meaning, can run something like Skyrim on medium settings, at least) PC, then I'd suggest trying a couple slightly-older-and-therefore-cheaper major titles in varying genres to see what works for you. Steam has really amazing sales all the time so you can pick up a good library of games for cheap. You might also want to pick up a controller if you're playing on the PC, because some games are a lot easier with one.

On the other hand, if your PC is not so great, I'd recommend getting an XBox 360, Wii, or PS3. What you choose largely depends on the types of games you want to play. Make a list of titles you want to check out, and then check to see what platforms they're on. The XBox has more exclusives, iirc, while the PS3 has more reliable hardware.

(I wouldn't recommend a current-gen console because the cost will be higher both for the console and games, and the library of available titles will be smaller.)

I'd recommend watching random LPs, or even reviews, to see what genres or titles you're interested in.

Thirding PC since you can find cheap or free indie titles that might give you a feel for what you like. For some old freebs that are likely to run on whatever you have, I recommend checking out Cave Story (a 2D platformer/shooter designed by one guy, including the awesome music) and Yume Nikki (Kafkaesque top-down exploration game made with rpgmaker).

And just download Steam. There's demos and a bunch of free things, including TF2 if you're curious about casual fps with other people. GOG focuses on older/retro PC games) and even has a few free games to try like Beneath a Steel Sky.

Also, PS2 and NDS have huge game libraries, not even considering the extended catalog that comes with PS1 and GBA backwards compatibility respectively (only the phat and lite DS can play GBA though). The consoles aren't going to cost you nearly as much as a current gen console, or even cheaper if you buy used.

and and and if you get into consoles remember that pawn shops and libraries are your best friends.

Wii! Just Dance
Also anything that your friends are into, so you can play together.
Don't get addicted to gaming, though.

Well, it depends if you favor handheld gaming or not. I'd maybe start with an XBox 360 and go from there. It has a pretty big assortment of games. I personally don't like PC gaming because of all the things that can go wrong with your PC. For the most part with a game system, you throw the disc in and it works.
