Re: Something Canon Het Shippers Do That Gets Under My Skin

You're overthinking this.

None of this matters. Canon vs het doesn't matter. Shipping doesn't matter.

It's all pixels on a screen, and we're going to die anyway. Why waste your energy being angry? Ship what you want to ship and have fun.

Those pixels represent the thoughts and actions of real people though. I mean, I agree that shipping doesn't really matter but what is this?

This internet vs "real life" dichotomy is just a pet peeve of mine.

True, I was being too hasty there in creating a dichotomy.

It just annoys me lately more than ever how much importance people attach to fandom things like shipping and whether something is canon, and then they attack each other over those trivial fandom things. When there's so much important stuff that happens IRL. People dying sort of changes your perspective, I guess. I just don't have a lot of patience for it anymore.

You sound like you're all of 14 and you've never experienced real loss or have ever been confronted with death in your short existence.

Don't make assumptions about people.

Evidently those who have experienced Real Loss (TM) and Faced Death know what's truly important: arguing about shipping on the internet.

LOL!

I'm sorry I laughed. I haven't experienced Real Loss(TM) yet, despite my advanced age.

Praise yourself lucky. It's really just random. I have this friend who's only 4 years younger, and literally never had anyone close to her die. She still has both sets of grandparents, and even one set of great-grandparents. She has this wonderful, big family - and while I love her and wish her all that happiness, I have this tinge of jealousy when I think that over half of the people I loved since childhood are now in a graveyard.

Sorry, that wasn't meant to be so depressing - I mean, enjoy it now that you have it, because you only really realize how wonderful it was when it's gone.

Frankly I'd say that fandom is my escape window from Real Loss(TM) and Faced Death(TM) both of which have been overrepresented in my life in my life.

While I tend not to have petty arguments about ships, I can sort of see how you'd divert your frustration to fandom things (while the real cause is actually real life hurt).

Yes, I can see that fandom can be some people's refuge, but I can't see how that's a reason to poison it for everybody with the unnecessary acrimony that rabid shippers can create. And I certainly can't see how urging a ship-and-let-ship attitude equates to "young person who has led a sheltered life and whose opinion is consequently worthless."

Sadly some people are just sort of toxic (and become more so when they're hurt). I never much liked the authority argument myself. While on some level, I do think that age and loss puts things in perspective, but it doesn't make your opinion more valuable in itself.
