Re: Something Canon Het Shippers Do That Gets Under My Skin
(Anonymous) 2014-11-12 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)Also, I'm sorry but evaluating romances that are canon is not equal to evaluating things like cinematography, or the plot. There are real life biases that can effect how someone will respond to a romance in ways it won't effect how they respond to cinematography. For example, do you really think someone who is homophobic will objectively evaluate a gay relationship, or that someone who is racist will objectively evaluate an interracial romance or a relationship with two people of color? These are factors that can't be ignored. People don't have to be screaming homophobic or racist commentary to hold problematic viewpoints that might make them not see the "chemistry" between two particular characters, or react negatively to two certain characters being in a relationship.
Basically you can dislike what you want when it comes to the canon of any show or film, but the way you go about disliking it, and what you say and how you act about what you dislike, is going to make people respond to you in different ways. So if you dislike a canon het ship and write one essay about it without any problematic commentary and don't act like those who like it are stupid or uninformed, I'm sure most people won't respond negatively. But if you say things that seem questionable, or if you go on and on about it non stop, or if you, for example, post meta after meta in places that you know pretty much only supporters of the relationship you are picking apart will read and see your meta, that is probably going to get you negative reactions and I think at that point everyone would have a right to call you out on your shit.
