I thought only clergymen were trained to perform exorcisms, unless these aren't just regular college kids...?

I thiiiiink that some of the more extreme evangelicals, like Baptists and Pentecostals or whatever, practice lay exorcism. Not sure though, the internet is being noncompliant.

They do, and people have died, as a direct result of these extremely unbiblical "exorcisms" (Protip: If that's not the way Jesus did it, chances are good you're not gonna get it done, boys.)

They're not gonna get it done period because possession isn't real.

only under catholic doctrine. evangelicals? everyone can be an exorcist.

I say this as a former non-denominational christian who witnessed a few. supposedly helped "cleanse" a house even though the whole time I was going "uhhhhhh no?"

LOL hope you ran far and fast from those crazies! I am also nondenom but far more normal--in my group, only ordained ministers can cast out demons, and no one is seriously wacko enough to think everyone who isn't our kind of Christian is possessed (the way Evangelicals do). Even the rare time when they do cast out a demon from someone, there's no great high drama over it, it's just like, Imma say the words (and the Word) and get it done, and that's it. Game over for the unclean spirit.

oh yeah, I did. we were all pretty young but I could still tell that the rest of them just followed the hivemind. if their sensationalist youth pastor said it, it was true.

idk about Protestant denominations, but only a small handful of priests in the Catholic faith have to go through intense coursework and prep to be trained -by Vatican officials, iirc- to do exorcisms, and they learn specific signs or 'red flags' before they decide if a legitimate exorcism is necessary... which, contrary to popular belief, isn't as often as media makes it out to be. Aside from that, I admittedly don't know *too* much about the subject, but that's what I've gathered over the years.

That said, I think they're just regular college kids horsing around and/or trying to be 2spoopy4u to get :15 of viral video fame, haha. XP

Thanks for the info, guys! I come from a Catholic family, so I've only ever heard of exorcisms performed by priests. Wasn't sure how it worked in other denominations.

Don't tell that to Bobby "the Boltin' Bayou Exorcist" Jindal!

And he's a Catholic as well, so... not everyone thinks that you need to be clergy to perform an exorcism.

...it's Texas. Why are you surprised? That's where the Muricans keep the REALLY crazy Evangelicals.

Ugh. I know there's been a few exorcisms on autistic kids that ended up killing them.
