I don't think it's a shameful interest, especially on the Internet. Sure, the huge anime craze of the 2000s has sort of died down, but liking anime has now become a lot more common and mainstream, I think. Maybe that's why people are a lot more casual about it now, because it's no longer a shiny new thing in Western media anymore.

Yeah there's a difference between liking anime and doing something that gets you plastered on "I made it through my weeaboo phase, you can too." That difference is largely behavioural.
