Obamacare

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
So, I have Obamacare. I applied and the tax credit is paying for a good chunk of my coverage (I pay the remaining $50). I just got a letter from my insurance provider. My premium will be going up to $80.

So I got two options, I can keep my current coverage NOT reapply and pay the $80.

Or reapply. But, I got a $1 raise at work this year. So, based on the estimation calculator thing, I'll be getting a smaller tax credit. And my plans will be higher. So my estimated premium is $101 a month. But that is not 100% sure (I am unsure if Obamacare accounts for things other than age + income in the real application).

Thoughts on Obamacare in general or my problem?

Not sure about your situation. My general thoughts on Obamacare are that it is better than nothing, but I believe that we should have pure, true universal coverage. This was the best that Obama could get, and it is actually designed after a Republican plan. But my ideal system is much more like the systems in Europe.

Now, Mitt spent an awful lot of PAC money trying to convince everyone that Romneycare was never a thing, and you have to go and call attention to it.

Ha. I'm from Massachusetts, so I'm pretty sure I'm allowed. Poor Mitt. Except not.

Poor Mitt. Except not.

I kind of want that on a T-shirt now.

Has the coverage improved to justify such a huge price jump?

No. But I think the price change was because I got older. Only thing I can figure.

Call your provider and ask what's up and if they have any suggestions on what to do.

Just be ready for a long day on the phone. I'm on Medicare and Medicaid and about once every few months someone over there fucks up and bills me for something I'm not supposed to be billed for so I have to get on the horn with them all fucking day until someone finally answers my friggin' question. And that's not even counting the dumb bullshit I had with a wrong name...

Are there cheaper plans you'd be willing to go switch to?

Getting older has always made my premiums rise - both for pre-Obama Care private single-payer insurance and for employer-provided insurance (my previous job was for a very small business and we were all privy to how much our insurance cost, even though the company paid for it). It sucks because it's not like anyone can help getting older, but there it is.

Did you get your insurance from a state exchange or one of the federal exchanges? If it was federal, you might want to wait until the Supreme Court decides that one case that's asking whether the tax credit applies to the fed exchanges.

Other than that, it looks like your premiums are going up either way, but not reapplying is going to be the cheaper option. Sorry, I don't know a lot about how the ACA works.

Isn't the time coming up again for enrollment in Obamacare to open? I also get a tax credit to apply to my premiums. But what about just switching insurance plans? After I enrolled on the federal website and it gave me my credit allowances, it was up to me to choose the insurance company/plan I wanted to go with.
