Despite what some may wish, shipping is not integral to fandom. Just enjoy the character. I've seen this sentiment so often lately, can we please get the message out that shipping is not the be all and end all of fandom? I know there is a big myth going around that it was Spock/Kirk shipping that started modern fandom, but I was there and in fandom at the time and I can assure you, the slash and shipping was very much a niche part of it even at the time. Since then it has just become a total monster,, taking over the rest of the fandom activities.

OP, enjoy the character, enjoy her flaws, enjoy her triumphs, and don't worry. Shipping is not compulsory, it would be more of a failure to only enjoy it if you can ship.

OP. I understand that. And I usually don't need to ship. But in the case of Buffy I feel this need to want her to be happy after all the crap she's been through. And for Buffy, part of being happy does mean being in a relationship.

You don't think the point of the entire series was Buffy learning she didn't need to be in a relationship to be happy? That her romantic choices worked out poorly, because she wasn't really the type of person who was happy as part of a couple? You didn't get that?

I rather thought the point was just that she wasn't ready for a relationship and that becoming ready for one wasn't something she could hurry.

The writers didn't goddamn get that!

To be honest, people rarely have their romantic side together at twenty one or two (or whatever age she's supposed to be) without the town they're living coming up to swallow you with End of the World nonsense.

She needed to stop needing to be part of a couple, sure. But because she's had no time to herself and sort out what kind of person she is, not because she's 'not the type of person who was happy as part of a couple'.

That sounds like a very unhealthy mindset, especially from someone that young.
