Newsflash: you do not have to ship your favorite characters with anyone. Especially if they're high school/college age. Being single is not a prison sentence, and there's plenty of time to find someone for her.

The idea of single happy Buffy appeals to me.

This.

Creepy Giles?

What is wrong with you?!?!?

But I don't really ship Buffy with anyone. I could have with Spike, but they absolutely destroyed that. No one else on the show came close.

It is supposed to be the description on the same line. Didn't realize it could be read the other way.

How about Oz?

Just ignore that whole Wild at Heart thing.

Despite what some may wish, shipping is not integral to fandom. Just enjoy the character. I've seen this sentiment so often lately, can we please get the message out that shipping is not the be all and end all of fandom? I know there is a big myth going around that it was Spock/Kirk shipping that started modern fandom, but I was there and in fandom at the time and I can assure you, the slash and shipping was very much a niche part of it even at the time. Since then it has just become a total monster,, taking over the rest of the fandom activities.

OP, enjoy the character, enjoy her flaws, enjoy her triumphs, and don't worry. Shipping is not compulsory, it would be more of a failure to only enjoy it if you can ship.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
OP. I understand that. And I usually don't need to ship. But in the case of Buffy I feel this need to want her to be happy after all the crap she's been through. And for Buffy, part of being happy does mean being in a relationship.

Buffy/Tara is one of my biggest BTVS ships. Willow and Tara are cute but the memory spell crap really got to me.

Buffy and Faith could also be really good together post-series if their respective shit stays gotten together.

I always preferred Buffy as a protagonist when she was single, though.

I never thought about Buffy and Faith but I'm kind of intrigued now.

And she has continued to enjoy being single ( although I cannot help myself, I still grin like a fool when she and Spike have adventures together now and again. *g* )

Ahem. Some of us don't read the comics/consider them canon.

I kind of dig single Buffy and her just rocking out her fabulous self while hanging with her friends. I always sort of liked it better when they were all single and hanging out and kicking ass.

I also kind of shipped Buffy and Kendra.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I know she doesn't need someone, but it's sad to see her have so much romance in the show/fandom and not be able to get into any of it. I couldn't even ship Buffy/Faith.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Have you considered cross-overs?

Off the top of my head, she's in the same age group as Luna and Ginny at Hogwarts and falls right in between Dean and Sam's ages on SPN, and that's just if you're trying to match up chronologies.

Although pairing her up with a Winchester would probably lead to Spike/Dru levels of world-destroying insanity...

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
The Winchesters would probably fall closer to the category of Spike and Angel for me. They are both creepy at times and really bad at relationships.

Now I want to ship her with Ginny, though. I'm going to hunt for fics.

I'm partial to Buffy/Spike and Buffy/Faith but tbh I think Buffy was one of those characters who I never shipped super-hard with anyone, I just wanted her to be happy in general because so often she wasn't.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-13 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
romantic relationships have not to be the end all of a character happiness; and I really agree that Buffy doesn't need someone to be happy.

Buffy/Happiness is my ship, and though it bums me that most fan content puts her in either Bangel or Spuffy, I'm okay with it. I need more Buffy Gen.

intrigueing: (buffy eww)

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-11-13 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from echoing the "a romantic relationship is not essential for happiness", I kinda always thought Buffy specifically would be better off single with a bunch of friends. She wasn't great at romantic relationships, and they always seemed to stress her way out and throw a wrench in her works more than make her happy.

(Personally, my favorite scenario is that she is happily single for ages and then she and Faith shack up in a kind of half-accidental casual way when they're both, like, 40 years old and have gotten all their shit together. And then do whatever the Whedonesque version of "Do You Love Me?" from Fiddler on the Roof would be. But I'm pretty sure that's just me...)

Disagreeing with everyone here to say that I understand perfectly, OP. For some people, even most people, complete happiness does mean not being alone and being in a relationship. I don't have any suggestions for who to pair her with, but I absolutely make a point of pairing my favorite characters with people who I think suit them. So, I get it.
