Aside from echoing the "a romantic relationship is not essential for happiness", I kinda always thought Buffy specifically would be better off single with a bunch of friends. She wasn't great at romantic relationships, and they always seemed to stress her way out and throw a wrench in her works more than make her happy.

(Personally, my favorite scenario is that she is happily single for ages and then she and Faith shack up in a kind of half-accidental casual way when they're both, like, 40 years old and have gotten all their shit together. And then do whatever the Whedonesque version of "Do You Love Me?" from Fiddler on the Roof would be. But I'm pretty sure that's just me...)

I also agree with you in regards to your top part as well, like I always felt that her learning how to be happy on her own would help her end up with someone she could be happy with.
