What unexpected things did you find out about your family/relatives lately, F!S?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-11-13 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
So, today my aunt told my mum that my cousin had a baby...3 months ago. We're not close, but, I'd have at least expected a card I guess. Only shows how estranged we really are.

In any case, she's the first of my first cousins to have a child - so yeah, that was a sort of unexpected thing to find out about.

My uncle's birthday was recently and my dad went to his party. He came back and said my uncle has dementia. I don't know if it's so unexpected since my uncle's memory has been going a little but he's also old and we don't see him much so ...

My dad's pretty bummed. Since he struggles with depression, that's kind of a big deal for me. :(

That sucks, anon. I don't have any great advice for dementia - it really is just sad to see. I can offer only humble internet hugs.

I will definitely accept humble internet hugs. :)

1. Found out a few months ago that my uncle raped my mother when they were kids.

2. Found out that my grandmother was conceived out of wedlock by someone other than the man I thought was my great grandfather. Only he totally is still my great grandfather because he was my great grandmother's awesome friend who married her when she found out she was pregnant and raised my grandmother.

Wow, that's some pretty heavy (and not so nice stuff). How did you even find out?

My parents decided that I'm old enough for them to tell me now. I just turned 25 recently.

I found out that my one aunt that I've never met is one of those survivalists living off the grid as much as possible, raising their own food and generating their own electricity and everything. I don't know how I never heard about that before.

I found out my grandma was a fan of boxing when she was younger -- not the hugest fan (sports were more my grandpa's domain) but she enjoyed watching the fights when they were on TV.

I suspect I know why, though.

I found out that my grandmother, during WWII, worked in a factory manufacturing bombs and grenades. That's completely awesome to me, I had no idea she ever did anything outside of housewifing/mothering. :D

Not to say that housewifing/mothering is bad! It was just something I had no idea that she was a part of.

That, on the staunchly conservative/traditional/uber religious side of my family, one of my uncles is a swinger and another is bisexual.

Had I heard about it when I was younger it would have blown my mind. These days it's more like "a religious conservative with bigoted views about marriage and homosexuality is a secret hypocrite?! LE SHOCK!!!!!!1111".

Yeah, the older I get the more I realize that this actually happens quite often but some families just put a lot of effort into making everyone shut up about it.

My mother didn't actually know her older brother for the first 4 years of her life. When my grandparents fled China, they could only take one child with them, so they took their eldest son and left the second one with relatives in Macau. He was there for 4 years before he could come over, and my mother was born during that time. They were complete strangers to each other at first (I mean, I'm sure they must've told my mother she had another older brother but she was too young to really understand).

That indeed sounds like a bit of a strange situation, especially at first.

We actually just heard about a week ago that my great-uncle T. (my mother's uncle; also my godfather) just got out of jail for molesting his grandkids (my cousins). We really don't know many more details than that; my mom is going to talk to her brother later this week because he is the one who was informed about this by their cousin (T.'s son). I feel awful about it, and of course my mom is really upset because T. reminds her so much of her dad, who died before I was born.

They live on the other side of the state from us, so I last saw T. in 2011, when his wife was still living. I think this abuse began after her death, because the cousin's family is fairly recently back in that area.

Sorry, anon, that's a bit of a shitty thing to find out about your relatives.

I found out my late father's second wife died, about a week after she passed. I tried very hard to not be close to my dad - due to Childhood Issues - so I never tried to be close to her. Still. I was surprised her son waited a week to tell my brother, who then told me.

God, we'll always be the most uncommunicative, dysfunctional family ever. Even when some of us die.

I found out that my paternal grandfather did not get his license taken for driving into Wisconsin, it was because he was actually stalking my godmother, who is my dad's childhood friend.

He's also doing a lot of lot of other really... dumb things, but the family's in denial that anything is wrong with him.

I found out my cunty bitch of a sister has a severe case of ASPD. Like, she talks about having her friends kill people she doesn't like-that's how severe. (She's in her early fourties, for reference)

I've decided to cut her from my life for good, as she refuses to seek help/refuses to believe she has problems.

I found out my dad spent time in a mental institution when I was young, because he threatened to kill himself and us when my mom tried to leave the first time. D: I knew they were bad for each other, but I didn't know it was that bad.

My one surviving uncle died in May and I only heard about it from his kids 4 months later :-(

And like you said - OK, we weren't super-close, but I cared about him and I would have flown across the country to attend his funeral if someone had just told me.

Yeah, I totally would have visited & gotten a present for the lil rugrat, too. Maybe I'm just too sentimental...I dunno. Sorry about your uncle.
