We're just gonna draw characters that wear corsets as if they're not wearing corsets and as if they're plus-sized because that's BODY POSITIVE and thin people can't be body positive because that's buying into norms.

I can't quite tell, but I'm guessing you're upset about a certain type of art?

YESS there are these people drawing this character as if she has a "real body" but it's annoying because, she's from a period piece and she wears a corset which of course changes her body's shape, and because "real bodies" aren't just size 10 and up, they come in all shapes and sizes. She isn't "not real" just because she's skinny.

And I know that people who aren't skinny have gotten a lot of shit in the recent past and me feeling bad isn't anything like a person who isn't skinny feeling bad. But I really don't like the idea that I don't have a "real body" just because I'm thin.

I agree with you on the principle that body positivity should include thin bodies.

I'm a little confused on the character stuff. I don't know the character, but... like, I'm confused about the way you're describing the character and the relationship between the corset and her body shape, I guess, and why that means that she must be skinny. I am just confused.

Sorry, I can see how it would be confusing.

She's thin to begin with and corsets have a slimming effect on top of that. When she's dressed, she's wearing a corset, because that's the time period. There are people specifically drawing her without a corset and with being non-thin because that's more "realistic." But it's not unrealistic to have her wear a corset, because she wears one in canon, and it's not unrealistic to have her be thin, because thin people exist.

SA - that makes sense, thanks for the clarification!

Personally, I don't think it's that weird to draw her without a corset, it's just different costumes. And similarly, drawing the character as larger is fine, it's just an interpretation. But yeah, calling that more realistic is weird.

I don't know what you're referencing but I'm just gonna take a moment to agree that lots of the body positivity movement is annoying. I hate how it always turns into a war between different body types.

Re: Wow

Yes that is what really bothers me about it. It's body positivity but only about certain types of bodies which is basically just the same thing as what already goes on. It's not fixing what's bad, it's just shifting the bad around.

I'm not sure what this is about, but I recently felt the same way about one of those "disney princesses drawn as real people" series. They just drew straight lines between the boobs and the hips and called it a day. Their arms were just as skinny. They just deleted the waist from existence. Poof. Gone.

Some people are thin. Some go in at the waist. Yes, there should be a wider range of female bodies represented in art, but you can't just pick and choose what you think is "more realistic".

Yeah that stuff is kind of weird. I think it would be better to celebrate a character who is actually fat. (they do exist after all) rather than altering a preexisting character. It's kinda bizarre and sometimes I can't tell if it's the fetish version or the body positive version.

context

context for those of you still around, I assume anon is talking about this:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/10/30/disney-princess-real-waistline_n_6076634.html

And a lot of people have talked about Belle or Aurora who are supposed to be wearing corsets (I disagree on Aurora, I don't think that's a corset it's just a dress with lacing). And I have to say, I am a thin person, and after looking at the "real" versions a lot of the Disney originals look downright deformed to me.

Oh no, I actually wasn't talking about that. I was talking about one specific character in a fandom I'm in. She's not a Disney princess.

My apologies, then! Ironically it sounds exactly like what people were saying about these pics. Sorry for confusing.
