Scam artist? Seems like another criticism that doesn't serve any purpose but to derail from the arguments in question.

And frankly, it seems to be more of a situation where she genuinely wanted to make movies, asked for money, ended up getting more fame and therefore cash than she both needed and knew what do to with, and made the quality of videos she intended to make from the start. I don't know how the heck she's a scam artist by asking to be funded for videos... that she actually made. Yeah, it seems like she took LPs, I don't really see how that's a "scam". Dishonest at best, but really doesn't have anything to do with the actual purpose of her videos.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Because she shows little actual knowledge of the video games themselves. So where did the money go if not to the systems and games she was going to buy for her videos?

That's why she's a scam artist. She may have gone in with good intent, but then the dollar signs began stacking up and she saw a way to make money.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh gee, I dunno, where does money normally go? Did you need receipts or something? Maybe she bought better cameras, took time off work, bought better lighting tech, hired someone to help, or maybe it's just considered overhead and she uses it to live. Unless she specifically said she was going to use money to buy X and only X, then it's not a scam, especially considering all the money she received. If you expect someone to spend over a hundred grand on video games, you're actually crazy.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
Except she didn't buy the games and systems like she said she would. Thus she didn't use the money for what she said she would, at all. She lied to her viewers.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
You have proof she didn't buy any games or systems?

idk, I've seen at least one photo of her next to a massive stack of games that appeared to be in her house.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
yeah it's not like she has friends whose games & consoles she can borrow to post for a picture amirite

Well, obviously you can doubt everything. Maybe it was all photoshopped.
Or maybe she played the games and used some of other people's footage because work like this is grueling and exhausting (having done some media studies) so, knowing which parts she was going to use based on the notes she took on her first playthrough, she then went and looked up the relevant footage. Yeah, it's a bit iffy, but the problem is that on a first playthrough you don't KNOW which parts are going to end up significant, you need to take notes and mark things and stuff, you can't record the entire game. tbh it's an insane venture, this whole thing.
I'm not even that invested, I'm just not automatically assuming she's Evil.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not automatically assuming she's evil. i know she's a scam artist, art thief, content thief, and an asshole.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
Except she shows a lack of knowledge of the games she showcases. Severe lack of knowledge. If she'd played them, she wouldn't get the shit she does wrong.

And I mean, shit-you-can-find-on-Wikipedia kind of getting it wrong.

Quit defending someone who obviously has lied. If she played the games, she wouldn't get things factually wrong.

tbh, it's not that I'm a huge fan of hers. I've seen some of these criticisms, and I agree that were we talking, say, academia, this stuff wouldn't really hold up. There's a lack of contextualization, for example, lack of nuance, etc.

If you have actual examples I would be interested in hearing, but enough with the slogans. I did read the thread, and I saw some examples that people (like ariakas) gave for how she presents thing in a misleading fashion, and the criticism is valid. My argument is that jumping from flawed technique to "she is a liar, believe nothing" sounds to me like you're just trying to shut down the conversation about women in video games.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Lol okay, so where's this list with all the facts that she got wrong that AREN'T interpretation?

Factually wrong list. No one has provided it yet, despite whining about how she gets absolutely everything wrong. Severe lack of knowledge? Let's see it. And no, I'm not going to be impressed by one or two tiny dodgy details.

For that matter, we also don't have proof that she makes those videos herself, instead of using a body double. Or that she made them at all, instead of coming to each of our individual houses and hypnotizing us into thinking we've seen them. Or that she's really human, and not just three large squirrels in a flesh suit!

Anita Sarkeesian is totally a scammer for tricking us into believing she's not multiple squirrels! Wake up, sheeple!

When you get right down to it, we don't actually have proof that she exists at all. Have you ever seen this so-called 'Anita Sarkeesian' in person? (if you say you have, you're probably just a lying stan)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-14 04:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, are you one of her backers/viewers who was really looking forward to improvements and her buying games she said she'd play? I'm wondering because I see this scam point brought up a lot but it seems almost entirely by people who were dubious or not too enthused about her videos in the first place. I fall in that category of critical about her movies from the start, but seeing as how I didn't back her, I don't see the need to call her out for scamming. The people who backed her might be 100% fine with her getting their moral support (in the form of money) and her not doing anything with it (because I also can see myself using money as a form of expression to say "I support this person and the issues he/she stands for, so take that, haters."). In that case, the accusation that she's a scammer falls flat.
