This is so vague, but I'm down for idolizing old fandoms.

In what sense, OP?

Don't they always warn you not to do that? The nerve of fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty much.

Or at least, in the past it used to be better at faking that it knew where it was going.

Which one? All of it?

Are people not doing fandom like you think they should? If so, you might want to think about why you care so much about how other people have fun.

This rhetoric is getting so boring. Omg, we musn't have any opinions on anything!

da

It gets exhausting to spend a lot of time being concerned about how other people have fun, to the point that you start to think that fandom is broken or lost just because it isn't exactly the way you want it to be. Being a Debbie Downer is fun at first, but not for long. Fandom's more fun now that I've stopped sweating the drama mongers and all the other people I used to bitch about. There's plenty of room in the sandbox for everyone to do their thing.

But as long as OP keeps it to themselves who cares.

You know, every goddamn person I've seen use that line is MORE THAN HAPPY to crack jokes about "sportsball" or criticize pop music for its toxic messages.

It's enough to make me think that they don't actually mean it, they just don't want THEIR ways of having fun criticized, no matter how creepy, stupid, or damaging they may be.

ayrt

Weirdly enough, no, nobody I know has ever liked having their ways of fun criticized, no matter how they're doing it. And I have never made fun of "sportsball" or said pop music has toxic messages. I only typed this because OP seemed to imply that everybody in fandom (which is a lot of people) is doing it wrong.

Now, I mostly watch shows/movies, read fanfic, occasionally write it, and come to Fandom Secrets. Am I defensive about it? Yes, some, because some people seem to think their way is superior. I just think there are lots of ways to enjoy fandom and there isn't anything really wrong with most of them.

Well that statement is vague as hell, but I'm sure you have your reasons for thinking so. Personally, I DO miss how easy it used to be to find people to chat about your fandoms with, but that's one of the reasons I still come to this place.

Well it certainly seems fucked now but I find it hard to believe it was better before. Maybe smaller? As long as parts of it still make me happy I'm not complaining.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
There's always been drama in fandom, but now fandom is mostly drama. There were better days. Sigh.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. I'm always seeing people fighting each other over fandom crap nowadays. What ever happened to squeeing over things together?

It's just fucked in a different way tbh.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
If you mean to imply that fandom has become a narrow minded parody of itself, I completely agree. Fuck fandom.

A++ for the Calvin & Hobbesing.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. It sure has.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Fandom had a way?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't really keep up with fandoms as much as I used to, so I just do my own thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 11:41 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. These days 'headcanons' read more like OCs with a mask and character name pasted on. I actually remember canons where being IC counted as opposed to whatever the fuck tumblr is promoting as 'characterization' these days.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
IAWTC and I also really miss the days where in character meant more than whatever ghe fuck ppl are doing now.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Whaaaat??? Whenever I see statements like this, I have to wonder if people stating them just haven't been in fandom long or have selective memories (or maybe just lucked out with their fandoms).

That has always been the case for as long I've been in fandom (back in the mailing list days). The fact that "Mary Sue" originated in a 1973 fanzine that satirized unrealistic Star Trek fan fiction shows that it's been going on for a very long time.

Sorry, you can't pin this one on tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:09 pm (UTC)(link)
So do a lot of people, but they usually have something to say about it, which then prompts discussion.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Or it prompts a lot of "omg you're so young and stupid, fandom was like this back in the days of Star Trek/the Bible/cave paintings, we're revoking your fandom membership, go back to Tumblr and stop whining" dogpiling.
