According to some people women and young children can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality. So we better protect those poor women from themselves.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well, considering many of the ppl I see who are all gungho about Rape is Love not being harmful ALSO think video games cause misogyny, I don't doubt some of them can't tell the difference.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Man, you're really going all out for this one, huh?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
no violence tho

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Anita sarkeesian was on the Colbert report recently. She was asked if she thought video games caused violence. She said no. Colbert asked her "but how do they cause misogyny?" (paraphrasing).

video games cause misogyny
I'm lost. Would someone explain this to me please?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It's about trolling in gamergate conversations

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
that joke's been stale day one

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about fresh jokes, it's about ethics in Dreamwidth commenting.

Video games don't cause misogyny nor does the Rape is Love trope cause rape. Instead, they reflective of attitudes throughout society.

For Rape is Love, I imagine that this is a popular trope for some women because they're uncomfortable with their sexuality (they don't want to be seen as a slut) while for other women, they might be ignored and passed over in their daily lives. So the idea that someone could lust after them SO much that they literally couldn't help themselves is attractive. And I'm sure there's other reasons as well.

But in each case -- when it's a trope or misogyny in video games -- it's more of a symptom than a disease (if you think such things are negative). Misogynistic video games wouldn't be made if society still didn't harbor some misogyny.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Mmmm. I can see how Rape is Love could cause rape. Young impressionable readers see this abuse as normal and condoned in fan circles. If they were to read a lot of dubcon as well, they may think, "Oh. Well, as long as the person doesn't outright say no and if they eventually enjoy it, it is okay!" Male victims can become visibly (and involuntarily) aroused. And considering the attitude I have seen on Tumblr from some younger female bloggers (entitlement, aggressiveness, etc), it is not out of the realm of possibilities.

I mean, recently some girls STABBED another girl because of an internet meme.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
The girls wouldn't be causing the rape, though -- they'd be the victim. Rape is Love exists, in part, because women are made to feel ashamed of their sexuality or made to feel worthless if they're not found to be attractive (and thus will cling to the only person "desperate" enough to be with them). It's more of a symptom than a cause of rape.

After all, those who rape them aren't likely to be reading Twilight or dub con fanficiton I'd imagine. I think you could say it perpetuates unhealthy attitudes in those who are vulnerable, but I think it's a real stretch to say the trope causes rape.

As for the aggressive, entitled female bloggers on Tumblr -- I'd hesitate to extrapolate their behavior in real life social situations from their online behavior because the two can be odds (and are, quite frequently).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
What? No. If you force someone to have sex with you it is rape. I don't care if you were made to feel worthless because you are not attractive. I don't care if it is a cycle of abuse sort of thing. You can be a victim AND a rapist.

And I am saying it is not out of the realm of possibilities to think some impressionable young woman internalizes the idea that "Rape is love + a little force is okay as long as they end up enjoying it" and then rapes someone.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Out of the realm of possibility? No. But it's a lot more likely that said impressionable young woman would internalize the idea that being coerced is a good thing because it means the person coercing her wants her so much s/he "can't control it", and fall into a relationship with an abusive partner because of it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
As another woman, that impressionable young woman can fuck off, I'm not sacrificing my happiness for her.

"Male victims can become visibly (and involuntarily) aroused."

Yes, they can. And here's the thing: so can female victims. Women sometimes orgasm from rape (and that usually intensifies the psychological trauma).

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I am aware. But it is not as visible. Which is the main thing you see in dubcon fics. "Oh, you are so hard you must want it." Male arousal it a hell of a lot easier to see.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Nearly every dubcon fic I've seen starring women does the same exact thing, though. They just change "you're so hard" to "you're so wet."

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Not to mention it's prevalent in damn near every hentai I've come across.

Misogynistic video games wouldn't be made if society still didn't harbor some misogyny.

thaaaank you.

Misogyny irl causes misogyny in games far more than the other way around.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly see men be more guilty of that. It's a bit horrifying the amount of times I've seen comments that go along the lines of "well a lot of women have rape fantasies and read 50 SOG, so that means it's okay to rape them (or it's not really rape/not possible to rape them) because every woman secretly wants it" from men. Of course it's not fair that women have to silence their sexual fantasies because some dudes are fucking morons who can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality, but this mindset still worries me.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Those morons should take a look at themselves and realize women want to be raped by sex god Christian Grey, and they're not Christian Grey.
