The very concept of fridging is total horse apples.

People die, characters die. It's what they do. Everything that happens in a story (including someone dying) is designed to in some way move the story forward. The idea that characters should not be killed to provoke an emotional reaction in the audience or a character is just utter rubbish.

Well, no. People get mad at fridging because it feels like an obvious, ham-fisted way to yank at the audience's heartstrings, and that's bad writing right there. The idea isn't that no characters ever die, it's that it shouldn't feel like a cheap trick performed by bored writers who can't think of anything better.

NAYRT, but I think the term "fridging" is as frequently misapplied as the term "Mary Sue".

Not nearly.

It is applied overly broadly, but hasn't yet reached the level of meaningless overuse as Mary Sue.

I wouldn't say so.

People get upset about Fridging because oftentimes, it's the female character that gets fridged in order to provide 'motivation' for the male characters to 'avenge' her and give him (or multiple hims) more manpain.

I think it depends. Was the killed character given her (or his) own personality and motivations before she died? Were we given a reason to care about her death?

Or did she just exist to die as a plot device, and we had no reason to care other than that the main character cared?

If it's the latter, then it's fridging, IMO.

Thank you for actually comprehending the meaning of the term. Surprisingly rare, I'm dismayed to discover.
