Heh heh, he so does that.

I can understand that! Though it depends I guess on whether "making fun" means "poking fun" or "bashing".

Also, I feel like I might be the only person here who still loves the "what I really do" memes. Anyone have any favorites to share?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I love poking fun at my favorite characters. People who can't do this don't have a sense of fun, imo. And like mentioned, there is a difference in making fun, and flat out bashing.
(Also, laughing my ass off at that image. Fucking Angel.)

A damn shame, cause that's probably the best approach.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They don't find it funny? But it's true. Angel is why I have a "brooding dark creatures" tag on LJ.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think the best comedy/parody comes from fans who love the show/movie.

Like Star Trek, the original. Best skit outside of fandom- the Saturday Night Live skit (obviously fans) or the MAD parodies (fans) vs Cracked (didn't seem to even watch the show).

I swear to god I've seen this macro posted on F!S before with a similar comment in the GC section. If I could only remember who posted it, I could probably out the OP of this secret...

Not weird at all. Makes perfect sense. Think of the way good friends, partners, and family members joke around with each other. It's very similar: good-natured ribbing done out of love and familiarity.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 10:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this is a wonderful and healthy approach.

I do this too.

I love Angel, but I have to admit I'm prickly about people making fun of him. Your example, though, is funny, because that's him.

Kinda like how some fanfic writers like to torture their favorite characters?

I think this is pretty common. I love certain characters, but it sure is fun as hell to make fun of them.

gently poking fun at my favorites is also my default approach when i get attached. the problem's that a lot of the characters i'm into tend to be unpopular, to say the least (i like a lot of ladies). so depending on the character, i can get a bit self-conscious about the mocking, no matter how gentle, because it feels like i'm piling in with the rest of the "haters".

so i often go the tired "flawless queen!!11" route instead, just to be safe.

I agree, OP. If you can't see the humor in the characters you love... well, that's a sad and limited kind of love, IMO. It also sounds like people taking the whole thing a little too seriously.

I'm definitely in the "mock because I love" category when it comes to my favourite characters/shows/books/whatever. Because it's fun!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-15 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
OMG that Angel thing is cracking me the fuck up.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Same, OP!

I never take any of my faves too seriously, as a general rule. I want to have fun! And the more I love them, the more I tend to mercilessly mock them.

Making fun of my darlings is my favorite pastime.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
As an avid Cas!girl (and an old Angel fan,) I completely understand.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
i feel you, anon. i'm the same way. 90% of what i write about my #1 OTP is fics that make fun of how much of a dumbass they can be in love, but i have more fun that way AND manage to keep them more in-character than the shitty seme/uke weepy run off and cry when your heart is broken shit that the majority of fandom loves to do with them.

I'm with you, anon. Mostly. I mock the ones I love.

(I have gotten really pissy at other people mocking characters I like, though. So it's not a direct correlation.)

I do this too. It's incredibly common, and I always wonder what some people think all the "This is my Trash baby" style tumblr tags are doing, anyway?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I think those who don't want their characters to be made fun of (when the joker is a fan themselves) take the whole thing too seriously and kind of miss the whole point of being in a fandom which to me is a place of imagination and HAVING FUN with the stories and characters.
