Actually, I think the best comedy/parody comes from fans who love the show/movie.

Like Star Trek, the original. Best skit outside of fandom- the Saturday Night Live skit (obviously fans) or the MAD parodies (fans) vs Cracked (didn't seem to even watch the show).

This is so completely true. It makes such a difference.

Yeah, this is so true!

See also why Galaxy Quest is arguably the best Star Trek movie ever made, while BroTrek/NuTrek made by J. J. "I didn't really like Star Trek" Abrams is all of the worst.

"BroTrek"
LMAO. I'm calling it that now.

I think it is because if you didn't watch/read/listen to whatever you make fun of I get so pissed at the mistakes that I can't concentrate on the jokes. Or that they tend to miss all the legitimate jokes in favour of stupid ones that are already explained in universe.

That's actually a good point, because yeah, it annoys me too. Do the research at the very least.

So much this! Jokes that only work if you know squat about the actual show don't really work as "jokes" to people who actually know the canon. Of course, there's a line when you can become TOO stick-in-your-ass serious about canon, though it's sometimes iffy to say where the line is.

(Like, I don't mind jokes about Captain Kirk being a sex maniac even though he wasn't, really, if you look at the situations where he was with some woman, because IMO that's a mistake even fans have made.)

That's why I pretty much can't watch anything that makes fun of boffer LARPers. I mean, it's a goofy hobby full of things to make fun of. And everything always goes "lol forsooth good sir what strange manner of clothes you are wearing. I will not break character even if you point a gun to my head."

Usually it's more "No, your battlecry is not 'Peanutbutter Jelly Time!' or 'SPOON!'"
