Just started Vagabound.

Heard good things about it, and the art has impressed and the story has been fairly well done so far, but not outstandingly so. Just competently told ronin flick stuff so far. Is this like Berserk where all the hype soon gets matched?

Finished the first labelled volume, but it's fairly substantial and looks to be composed of the first three actual volumes.

I remember reading Vagabond waaaay back when it first came out in English and there wasn't a lot of manga to choose from yet, I'm surprised it's still going. I remember enjoying it well enough, but not being swept up in it for the first couple of volumes or so that I read, and then I stopped keeping up. Like you said, competent, but not grab-your-brain good.

Vagabond is so so good.

Yeah it gets better as Takezo starts to think more about what he's doing and who he wants to be. I think I remember starting really getting into it at volume 7 or 8.
The art gets even more beautiful too.

Ah, so that's far I have to read before I get into it, I only made it a couple volumes. I've been looking for an ongoing manga to get attached to, and Vagabond seems promising.
