Manga/comic/webcomic thread

Feel free to make recommendations, talk, or whatever.

Just started Vagabound.

Heard good things about it, and the art has impressed and the story has been fairly well done so far, but not outstandingly so. Just competently told ronin flick stuff so far. Is this like Berserk where all the hype soon gets matched?

Finished the first labelled volume, but it's fairly substantial and looks to be composed of the first three actual volumes.

I remember reading Vagabond waaaay back when it first came out in English and there wasn't a lot of manga to choose from yet, I'm surprised it's still going. I remember enjoying it well enough, but not being swept up in it for the first couple of volumes or so that I read, and then I stopped keeping up. Like you said, competent, but not grab-your-brain good.

Vagabond is so so good.

Yeah it gets better as Takezo starts to think more about what he's doing and who he wants to be. I think I remember starting really getting into it at volume 7 or 8.
The art gets even more beautiful too.

Ah, so that's far I have to read before I get into it, I only made it a couple volumes. I've been looking for an ongoing manga to get attached to, and Vagabond seems promising.

Okay, I stumbled up this 4-koma series about love confessions and it's legitimately one of the funniest and most adorable things I've read in a while. Nearly every chapter left me with a big old grin on my face. I'm terrible at selling things, but you guys should at least give the first chapter a shot at least.

Read it here: http://bato.to/comic/_/comics/wakabayashi-toshiya%E2%80%99s-4-koma-collection-r9820 or (here if you can read Japanese) http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=465084

i'm not a big fan of webcomics but i like oglaf

it's funny, well drawn, and i like how natural the nudity and sex feel

also the lore is actually pretty cool

I need to reread and catch up. I forget Oglaf exists for months at a time and then bingeread.

I love Oglaf to bits.

(One of the best stories I ever got for Yuletide was a pinch hit where Sandoval wakes up to find that his penis is missing ... it was so, so hilarious.

Do you also read Platinum Grit? (That's one I always forget to check on.)

I've been reading Oglaf for years and it never stops being awesome. The range of different body types and orientations, the unpredictable humor, never stop being fun. Although I miss there being more comics tied into ongoing storylines. The one about the cock rampage was goddamn amazing.

I just came across The Legend of Bold Riley. Only looked at the first story so far, but it looks delectable.

From the Northwest Press website:

“Who is Bold Riley?” you might ask. She has hunted the wildest game and dallied with countless beautiful girls, but still longs to know the world beyond the city walls. Princess Rilavashana SanParite, called Bold Riley, leaves behind her station and sets out to travel through distant lands and find forgotten ruins, fearsome enemies, inscrutable gods and tragic love.

Goblins finally started updating again. It's sort of the elephant in the room of D&D comics: every comic wants to show how silly or ridiculous living in a world based on D&D would be, but no one wants to admit Goblins already blew them out of the water by showing how horrific it would be. The author has a knack for rapidly developing likable characters, then throwing them into situations where you have no way of seeing how they can possibly get out alive. Fair warning: very strong violence!

Slightly Damned has one of the most original worlds I've seen. The characters are fairly conventional, but charming nonetheless, and their interactions form a bond far greater than the sum of its parts. At every point since the comic started, I've wanted to know more, both about the world, and about what will happen next.

I'd also recommend Dissonance if it would ever frigging update. Agh!

I'll always, always rec this for Captain America fans.

Steve Rogers' Captain America: A Diary Story. Deals with PTSD, loneliness, relationships, and depression. Has awesome supporting characters. Here is the link to read it chronologically. http://americancaptaincomic.tumblr.com/tagged/comic/chrono

Romantically Apocalyptic. http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/1 Just a weird but awesomely drawn comic.

Courtesy of some random TV Tropes link, the page that got me interested in Romantically Apocalyptic: http://romanticallyapocalyptic.com/45 I would post it in the thread itself if it weren't so huge.

All Star Western (which recently ended a few months ago) was one of the best comics DC had going. I'm amazed it lasted so long with nobody fucking talking about it.

City of Owls

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Finally got around to reading Vol. 1 (Court of Owls). I'm not a comics person so I come with absolutely zero prior knowledge (apart from the Burton and Nolan films). But I have to say, I'm really enjoying it so far.

I want to buy the next volume (City of Owls) but I'm too broke.

Anyone else have any thoughts/opinions on it? Does it continue to be entertaining, or does it downslide into mediocrity?

Most of what I read these days is manga since comics are not available in my country. I've seen a couple of DC stuff at the supermarket, though. Also obligatory Cable & Deadpool rec.

Webcomics... obligatory anime club because it was both painful and hilarious to read.

I also recently caught up on Watashi ga Motete Dousunda Manga. Also Fuan no Tane Plus, for the anon who posted a secret about it last time. I'm reading Boku Girl with /a/ because their reactions during the translation threads give me some sort of sadistic glee. And there's Yuri Hime Wildrose for anyone who's into yuri.

Uh... I have a lot more bookmarked, if anyone's interested.

Glad I'm not the only one reading Boku Girl here! It's thoroughly ecchi, but also really cute in a way I wasn't expecting. Haven't been feeling the live translation threads as much lately since most of the reaction images boil down to "i've got a boner" though. Still read 'em since they're way ahead of the scanlations however.

I'm be down to hear about some of the other stuff you have book marked. Lighthearted and funny are usually the sort of I go for if you need to narrow it down some, but I'm open to a lot of things.

(just not horror, because I'm the biggest wuss ever)

some webcomics

[personal profile] raspberryrain 2014-11-16 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
I like Amy Stoddard's Fine Sometimes Rain. I've been so busy with other things, though, that I haven't checked it in a month.

And I read Gastrophobia, which I still say is a more historically accurate take on Amazons than what you get from certain superhero comics ;).

And Girls with Slingshots is pretty fun, and kind of an inspiration to my own work...or would be if I produced more.

(this will probably be the last post on this page

Manga:
Yotsuba&! really is pretty cool if you can at all get into slice-of-life about a small child.

Comic:
There's a new Squirrel Girl ongoing from Marvel. The first issue is being solicited now (until Tuesday in the USA). Because I am both ancient and stupid, I honestly have never bothered to figure out how Marvel's online stuff works.

Webcomic:
Ummm...Flaky Pastry is pretty fun if you like kitchen sink fantasy, and it doesn't take quite as much of an archive binge as a lot of webcomics.
And whatever John Allison is doing: Bobbins / Scary-Go-Round / Bad Machinery / et cetera. Wanders from slice-of-life to horror to comedy to parody.

Everybody read Chris Baldwin's "One Way". It's really good. Also go back and read Spacetrawler. They both have the best characters, and are the best comics.
