Speaking as an autistic -- social skills are hard for me to pick up, but being socially inept is definitely not an intractable problem. It just takes a lot of practice and concentration and careful observation of other folks; I have a long-standing habit of rehearsing possible conversations in my mind in vivid detail, which I think has been useful. I actually have quite a wide circle of friends at present, which is admittedly somewhat new for me.

Also, my girlfriend, who is also autistic, once said that she in fact feels pretty comfortable with expressing herself in words (written or spoken) by now, precisely because she's had to work so hard at that and at puzzling other people out.
