What are the old dead fandoms that you miss the most? (Or the ones that changed too much for you to enjoy.)

X-Files - there was so much great fanfic, too.

9/11 killed it. Kinda hard to have fun with conspiracies when there actually was a real one. And then of course, you are just not allowed to criticize the government or those that go beyond decency to hide things from the public. The truth is out there, but go looking for it and you'll be in gitmo.

Not very old, but I'm super sad at how quickly the Legend of the Seeker fandom died out once the show was over. For a while there it was a really active fandom, and I felt at home there. There were several awesome communities. Now the landcom is about the only thing left, and it is almost dead.

This makes me sad because I got into LOTS a bit late (shortly after season two began, I think), so by the time the show ended it felt like I had just started watching. I mostly watched fanvids and never experienced much of the fandom itself. :( I love it so much, though.

The fandom was super awesome and welcoming. And there were some really active communities. Most of them have died, though. Legendland is still going for another couple of rounds, which is fun. And I'm LJ friends with a few fans. But it is not anywhere near what it was just a few years ago.

And now I want to rewatch the show.

Ranma. Its just dead now. The few fics getting flushed out are all the same old plot over and over again. Even five years ago it was still churning out multiple fics which were really imaginative and took the concepts to new and different places each time. Of course it is a rare case where the fic was killed by a single power-fan who set out on their self-appointed duty to make sure that all of the fandom confirmed to their vision, and 'sperged all over everything.

SG1 fandom has died. Its just people talking about woobie Daniel getting heavy petting from Jack, and nothing else.

I agree. There are still some Sam/Jack shippers as well, but very little gen/meta/discussions. It makes me sad.

DBZ, Leverage, Firefly.

One fandom that I only recently got into but is basically non-existent (which sucks because I want to talk to people about it) is We're Alive: A Story of Survival.

Yeah, I wish Firefly had lasted longer. I unfortunately got into it just as the fandom was fizzling, too.

I miss 616 fandom. I feel like MCU just completely eclipsed it over.

Legacy of Kain. It was such an amazing fandom. It was small enough that basically everyone was a 'BNF', but everyone I ever spoke to was just an all around awesomely nice person. People put so much work into their fan sites and fic archives and shit.

Oh wow, I never even considered that Legacy of Kain could have a fandom. That sounds awesome.

Sadly I think all but one or two or the fan sites don't exist anymore, and I've never been able to find the others in the way back machine.

There's still some excellent fic up at ff.net, though, and some authors have moved their old things to AO3.

Avernum fandom was pretty fun. Avadon's kind of cool as a spiritual successor, but the canon leans too You Bastard for my tastes.

I miss the Sailor Moon fandom I grew up in, when it was composed of "yay magical girls!" and bugshit ridiculous theories (Prince Uranus anyone?) and notoriously terrible fanfiction for all to mock and laugh at.

It's so stressful and angry these days, I can't stand to participate at all now.

Re: Inspired by #5:

Yeah. If I could have one thing in the world, it would be for fandom to stop being such Serious Business crap and actually be fun again. Fandom -any fandom- is just unpleasant right now with little tinpot Napoleons setting themselves up as the opinion police. I want to enjoy fandom my way, not the way some little tosser thinks is the correct way.

The problem I have with the Sailor Moon fandom is that it suffers from what I call 'canon baggage'. It's an old fandom with a lot of people who have been into it for a long time, so there's a LOT of people who are super invested in it. It also has a variety of adaptations to choose from, which leads to the inevitable arguments.

Not just that, but it has become an Unpleasable Fanbase, which generally means 'the fans don't know what they want' and 'they changed it, now it sucks'.

The social network.

It had an amazing kink meme but no new material.

I miss the Tumblr KHR fandom. There was a group of us on Tumblr, we were all really close, and I genuinely felt welcome and comfortable, even with all the personal drama that was going around. The group I was in all fell apart due to personal rivalries about a year before the series ended, and now I just see the occasional post from the people I'm still in touch with.

Awwww. I only finished it (anime and then manga where it left off) a couple months ago and I wish I was there.

The J/7 portion of Voyager fandom is pretty much dormant at this point, and even though it could be very frustrating at times, I still kind of miss it.

Shark never had a big fandom to begin with (I think there were twelve of us at most), but we were all close and had a lot of fun together. Also, it got me back into writing fic again after a long dry-spell, so that adds to its nostalgia value. I wish I knew where my friends from that fandom drifted off to. I haven't heard from any of them in years.
