I don't really get this complaint-- most fans aren't fluent in Japanese, so there's no way for them to know if something is mistranslated or not.

I agree that a lot of times there's some bad english, but honestly I only keep up with One Piece so the official translations with the name changes annoy me more.

fellow OP fan says yes, this. the name changes and the horribly OOC insertion of random "yarr!" pirate slang into dialogue is, to me, far less forgivable than a shitty scanlation.

(yes, I know the reasoning behind Zoro's name change but it's still dumb as dicks)

Way late reply but: Apparently the copyright holders to Zorro took issue with it since the names sound similar, so they had to change it.

Just because you don't know there are mistakes doesn't mean there aren't any. You could be reading lines that are just flat out not what the character said, and you're more likely to run into that sort of thing in scanlations.
