Well, mostly it's because I do not understand Japanese so my options are limited. I agree some of the translations are horrid. It's just that if I want to read it in any way or form, that's the way it has to be.

Official translations used to be a lot worse and I think there's still a lot of fannish sentiment related to that, and to the desire to do things on your own. Just the way it is.

TBH it doesn't bother me much either way unless the translation is basically unreadable.

I don't really get this complaint-- most fans aren't fluent in Japanese, so there's no way for them to know if something is mistranslated or not.

I agree that a lot of times there's some bad english, but honestly I only keep up with One Piece so the official translations with the name changes annoy me more.

Well, someone doing a shitload of very fast translations in a very short time (as is often the case with scanlations, where new chapters sometimes get translated as soon as they come out) and translations that often take a lot of time - if they exist at all - (as is often the case with official ones) are bound to have some differences in quality.
And oh my god, it's almost - *gasp* - as if the people in one of these scenarios gets paid to do it!

If you think the scanlations are so bad, how about you try it yourself sometime? Then we'll talk again.

I'm going to assume you're referring to manga which has an official translation in the first place. Because otherwise the obvious answer is you either have to read scanlations or not read it at all.

And maybe this makes me bad or wrong according to some people, but I actually consider a translation (official or not) best when it sounds natural in the language it's translated into. I'll happily sacrifice accuracy for flow if necessary. I'd rather have some who has mediocre Japanese skill and great English skill doing scanlations than the other way around.

And I do feel sometimes the people doing the scanlating don't seem to be native English speakers, and are only so-so at English. Which you'd think wouldn't be that hard to fix, just run it past a native speaker and they can suggest fixes, and then the scanlator can check it against the original.

Because I don't read Japanese, because most (all?) of the manga that I read scanlations of aren't licensed, and because I can generally overlook a few awkward phrases I'm interested in the story. It's an amateur translation that I'm getting for free and I know that going into it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's pretty easy to get the gist of what they're saying, and as long as the manga is more visual/less text-heavy I can put up with it if I have no other options. I'm not sure if you taught yourself, but it can be hard to figure out where to go after a certain point.

I am confused about how some of these scanlation groups put this stuff out, if they have at least one seemingly fluent member, why not have that person look stuff over?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless you're going to get nit picky, scanlations are ok to tide you over till the official release. I enjoyed all of Fullmetal Alchemist before it was printed in America like that.
However, I really prefer subtitled anime. I barely understand any Japanese at all, but knowing which honorifics and pronouns the characters use to refer to one another really helps me understand the story better.

I find it very difficult to believe you've read 95% of ALL scanlations, or that you'd have access to all of the original versions to compare every single line. Maybe 95% of the stuff you've stumbled across is crap, which isn't exactly the same thing.

Not all translators are native English speakers either, and while I agree that a few groups could do with a decent beta reader, I can count the number of times a scanlations has legitimately left me baffled on one hand.

They're doing it for free, and it means I get access to stuff I never would otherwise. I'm willing to overlook a few awkward phrasings without getting ridiculously elitist and nitpicky over it.

The reason they read scans is that they want to read the story as soon as it's there. With internet, some people have become really impatient in that area.

As for the reason they're saying official translations are bad, if it's like in France (where it doesn't happen too often with manga but quite a lot with anime), it could be either because of ignorance or hypocrisy : they don't want to buy the stuff because it's expensive so they give excuses.
Some fansubbers also have a grudge with editors because of the way the market evolved (internationnaly with sites like Crunchyroll, in France we also have other similar platforms of simulcast and some really recent anime can also be seen on cable tv) and they try to paint the professionals as greedy bad guys who wants to make money out of anime~
It can be pretty ridiculous and a lot of the people following them don't realize that those working on the anime they love need money to work and that watching the official translators' version will give them some money.

Recently, I even saw a ridiculous petition with something like 300 signatures asking french editors to stop licensing new series... Yeah, some anime fans don't want their favorite series to be available in their country. The absurdity is incredible.

Because a scanlation will often come out the next day or so from the Japan release (if it's a popular series). And then people buy it when it comes out in volumes.

I know you said "these days" but I remember some real shitty official translations back when I read manga. Might have to do with some people going to fan translations as well.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's something. Because most things I like don't end up translated officially, let alone at all. Because at least you can tell what's going on. Anyone who puts their work into translating, subbing and scanlating things for fans to enjoy for nothing in return needs to be respected.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Some official translations change to much though. Like going from noodles to burgers. That is why I sometimes end up reading scantilations anyway.

I can think of several reasons:

1. It's free.

2. It's quick. Some people will follow the scanlations and then later buy the official release.

3. It's easily available, wherever in the world you are, unlike many official translations.

4. When manga first started being marketed in English, there was a lot of really awkward translations. Even if you had no prior knowledge to the original story, they just sounded bad in English. So those who are old enough to remember that may still think that the official translations are still the same poor quality (personally, I think if you're really that concerned about the quality and authenticity of the translation, you should just learn Japanese so you don't have to worry about it).

5. It's free (yes, I listed it twice because I think this is probably the primary reason).
