My biggest thing (more for fansubbing but still applies to scanslations) is that a lot of the times the official and fan translation will have the same base meaning, but the official one sounds bland and very literal, while most fan translators try to add a little bit of "flavor".

I can only think of two fan translations I had to drop because of bad translation, and that was from a standpoint of "ESL but just barely" making them completely unreadable.
