I'm going to assume you're referring to manga which has an official translation in the first place. Because otherwise the obvious answer is you either have to read scanlations or not read it at all.

And maybe this makes me bad or wrong according to some people, but I actually consider a translation (official or not) best when it sounds natural in the language it's translated into. I'll happily sacrifice accuracy for flow if necessary. I'd rather have some who has mediocre Japanese skill and great English skill doing scanlations than the other way around.

And I do feel sometimes the people doing the scanlating don't seem to be native English speakers, and are only so-so at English. Which you'd think wouldn't be that hard to fix, just run it past a native speaker and they can suggest fixes, and then the scanlator can check it against the original.

I just want to say thank you. I just started fan translating for my own personal use, and I actually do a literal translation first, then massage the lines into natural English, trying to keep the meaning intact which occasionally only vaguely resembles the literal translation. And I feel like a heel doing it sometimes, but I can't stand it if a conversation is stilted or ends up in "Engrish".

You know, I'm not living in Japan anymore so I can't buy manga in Japanese, so scanlations are my only way to get a lot of manga, which is why I made this secret. But I found that I can't read stuff that's badly translated, it just grind my gears so badly (especially if the English is awkward, which it so often is). I'd rather not read it at all than read it done badly. It's like reading a book with shit writing... why would you do it?
