(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)That being said, my problem with official stuff is the quality. Not necessarily of translations, but as a scanlator myself--the TYPESETTING is horrible. They'll use all one font, or maybe one font mainly and then another 'aside' font, they never clean/replace SFX (a lot of people dun curr I guess, but it looks so lazy to me; we clean all SFX in my group--and I'm one of the cleaners as well as a translator so I know how much work it takes, which is why I lose respect for a company that expects me to pay them for something I can get better quality of from a scanlation group), and the formatting itself is usually horrific, with little effort made to 'square-out' speech bubbles.
We drop any work the moment it becomes licensed, but every single licensed version of our stuff that I've seen...has been much lower quality overall than ours, in every respect. It just frustrates the mess out of me.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 05:16 am (UTC)(link)The reason they don't replace sfx (except VIZ) is because you have to pay the letterer twice as much. And there's a trend in the industry these days to make the translator both translate and letter, which takes the quality of lettering down across the board because most translators are not very good letterers because they're translators first. And so now you don't have to pay a letterer.
To be fair, most manga companies are operating on very thin margins these days and they can't afford to pay their staff any more than they already do. And the reason they can't is because of scanlations, basically. The industry is really struggling.
