I find it very difficult to believe you've read 95% of ALL scanlations, or that you'd have access to all of the original versions to compare every single line. Maybe 95% of the stuff you've stumbled across is crap, which isn't exactly the same thing.

Not all translators are native English speakers either, and while I agree that a few groups could do with a decent beta reader, I can count the number of times a scanlations has legitimately left me baffled on one hand.

They're doing it for free, and it means I get access to stuff I never would otherwise. I'm willing to overlook a few awkward phrasings without getting ridiculously elitist and nitpicky over it.

It's not being elitist. I appreciate that they're not pros and doing it for free. What I'm saying is that bad writing does not make it enjoyable to read. Would you enjoy reading a fanfic full of grammatical errors and typos and awkward phrases?
