I feel there will be a lot of us in this club.

I hated X-Men Quicksilver's look when I first saw production stills. I even laughed at him! But obviously I then saw the film and it made sense, plus he stole the scenes he was in - to the point where I think they HAD to get rid of him early on in the plot because he was just too powerful.

I am cautiously optimistic about AoU's Quicksilver though because even the things the MCU has done that disappoint me don't disappoint me all that much in the grand scheme of things.

Quicksilver was my favorite part of DoFP. He was just so much fun!

The thing about AoU is that I'm curious/worried about how many characters they're going to stuff into this movie and how/if any character development is going to happen.

Yeah, same here. Actually, looking at the lineup for the upcoming MCU movies I wonder how it's not going to be a mess by the time Avengers 3 rolls around... in comics you can take the time to work with huge casts if necessary, but a movie needs to tell the story in 2.5 hours or so.

Yeah, I'm not sure how they're going to fit in every Avenger, the twins, villains, supporting cast, cameos, Stan Lee, and Nick Fury, and the approximately 10,000 explosions they are contractually obligated to insert all into one movie.

You forgot the spaceships that need to be stopped before they wipe out all of humanity.
Sounds like if you give every character ~2 minutes you have just enough time to fit in all the explosions, the dramatic countdown, and some cameos, with a few seconds left over for wisecracking.

Also I don't understand why they signed Sebastian Stan on for five gazillion movies if we're not seeing him in anything :( I was sure there'd be a Bucky movie!

I just figured the spaceships are going in the background of every scene? Loki melodramatic angst scene inside a glass prison? Spaceships in the background. Tony Stark's snarking it up inside the tower? Spaceships in the background. Natasha hacking a computer while simultaneously kicking Russian mobster ass? Spaceships.

Is Bucky not going to be in AoU? I'd actually prefer it if we waited until CA3 before seeing him again. His is a good story and it deserves better than an overstuffed burrito of a movie to flesh it out.

You're right, multitasking is the way to go. Like, they can snark while ON a spaceship, Loki can angst in a glass prison in a spaceship hurtling towards Earth, Tony snarks while spaceships crash into Avengers Tower.
Tbh this movie sounds more entertaining than what we might actually be getting.

Well I don't mind Bucky not being in AoU, per se, 'cause like you say he probably wouldn't get anything decent done with him anyway. But I thought he'd at least be getting a standalone or something... he's got tons of backstory, and there are storylines with him that could be worked into full movies easily.

The fanfics for the Avengers movie were a lot better than the movie itself.

I thought he was getting his own movie, or did that fall by the wayside? I thought he was supposed to be the next Captain America when Chris Evans got tired of acting. There is a lot they could do with that. How does a man who fought against America and was a tool of one of the most evil organizations on Earth take up the shield?

ahaha I know that's coming, but I'm not sure I'll really be able to keep watching once Chris Evans is gone :X I like his portrayal too much, and Steve in the MCU has had such a short, sad life, that I don't see it ending anywhere happy...

Given how everyone on the internet is suddenly acting like they're tired of superhero flicks, we may not reach that point. The bubble's gonna burst at some point.

[personal profile] ketita 2014-11-16 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
true, though internet complaining =/= box office. We'll have to see how the upcoming ones do... I agree that the bubble is definitely going to burst, it's just a question of time.
I think that in general, though, the CGI bubble needs to burst as well. Yes CGI is cool, but I'm getting tired of fancy CGI coming instead of plot and characters, as opposed to being window dressing and a tool enabling the telling of fantastical stories.

OMG, yes, yes, yes to the CGI stuff! Yeah, it looks pretty but A. technology marches on and today's fantastic special effect is tomorrow's eye roll; B. you can have the prettiest explosion in the theaters but if I don't feel any emotion to the main characters what good is a pretty explosion?

I kind of wish Hollywood would turn out some quieter character studies films instead of the constant churn of blockbusters. It would be cheaper (I imagine), artistic, and it would give us a break from the blockbusters (and I think this bubble would last a little longer if we had a break from it every now and again).

[personal profile] ketita 2014-11-16 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, same here! I mean, half the reason I don't go to theaters often is because of the prices. Well what if they could make movies more cheaply, and then sell tickets for less? At this point a more artistic movie would be a breath of fresh air.
Fancy explosions and sweeping CGI-scapes are no longer interesting. It was amazing when Star Wars came out and nobody had seen the like before, but we're kind of past that.
You know what, it doesn't even have to be completely non-fantastical films, you know? You can have magic! but let the CGI serve the plot instead of the other way around. (I had kind of hoped that the Ender's Game movie would be like that... but alas, it was a bad movie...)

[personal profile] iceyred 2014-11-16 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't have the money to go see movies very often. I'm just not interested in non-existent plots and static characters.

Oh, they could definitely do a fantasy/sci-fi movie without over-doing the CGI. I mean, 'Labyrinth' was great. So was 'The Dark Crystal' and 'The Never Ending Story.'

He was probably my favourite part as well!

I share your concern because it was "bad" enough in Avengers, much as I really adore that film. Thor didn't really get any character development outside "my brother is the bad guy" angst and then Hawkeye spent most of the film as a flying monkey so you can't really go very far with that when he gets some sense knocked into him basically with what, 40 minutes of the run time to go?

I thought Avengers did very well balancing a huge cast but there's no denying some characters got more actual minutes of screen time or dialogue than others. So yes, adding two more main cast members along with all the cameos we're allegedly getting does make me tread carefully with my optimism! The trailer makes it all look awesome though.

That was my main beef in the first Avengers movie. I cared about those people in their movies, but I couldn't bring myself to give a damn about them in their team-up film.

The trailer does look cool. I kind of like the 'no strings' thing they've got going on.

[personal profile] sparklywalls 2014-11-16 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I know I'm probably in the minority here but I think Stark needs to have his screen time cut so the others have time to shine. I know RDJ is basically the main cash cow and the average fan loves Iron Man but I really don't want Iron Man to do to the MCU what I feel Wolverine does to the X-Men films. I get Wolverine is a fan favourite too but he takes over almost any film he's in - DoFP narrowly avoided him doing it again IMO!

Doubt I'll get my desire with AoU. The trailer and leaked clips are very Stark heavy but at least Rogers seems to be getting an almost equal amount of attention.

I can roll with that. Stark's a great character, but he's not the only great character. I'd love to see Nat and Clint get a little development.

Maybe, if we are very good and the Powers that Be are kind, we'll get another reference to Budapest this time around.
