I'm starting to get really annoyed by that "if you don't like a female character you're misogynistic" thing. That attitude really is not as common as people here make it out to be.

People want to feel like they're going against the norm, so if they don't like a female character they'll pretend all of fandom is against them.

They're so brave for going against the totally-supportive-of-female characters norm!

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It is from fans of unpopular female characters (see: Laurel Lance, Arrow), and sometimes even popular ones (see: Regina Mills, OUAT).

Really?

I can't even think of a single recent instance of even the most minor criticism of female characters when someone doesn't play the misogynistic card.

Yeah. I know that Tumblr blog fandomshatewomen is all over this shit.

Which really pisses me off because I, personally, find it misogynistic as heck in its own way.

"Oh, you dislike a female character? You must be a misogynist!"

Right…because the only reason a woman is ever hated is BECAUSE she's a woman. Because women are all the same! And don't have any defining or unique characteristics that could make them unlikable!

Like, Christ, with that logic, you can't dislike Sarah Palin -- even though she's said and done PLENTY to make people hate her guts. (And, yes, I recognize that people have said misogynistic things about Sarah Palin. But that hardly makes criticism/dislike of her misogynistic in and of itself.)

This is the biggest issue with any conversation about Anita Sarkeesian, tbh.

In spaces with some kind of nominal commitment to feminism, that is probably true.

As a broader generalization, I don't think it's even close to tenable.

Really? I must be hanging out in the wrong fandom circles then. It goes so far that I think thrice before I say something negative about a female character.
