It's not like it was a super elaborate plan. There were woods nearby and they went there, like many kids do to play. Originally they were going to try to kill her in one of the girl's houses, so this plan wasn't a masterpiece by any stretch.

The 'ringleader' also apparently believed she could communicate with Voldemort, and other such things. It just doesn't seem like the lawyer had to reach too far to realize the girl had mental problems.
