I'm sorry.. I just can't stop seeing your "OP's opinion is wrong" and imagining a kid having a hissy fit because someone's not playing their pretend game right.

OP is talking about their personal reason for why they don't ship canon characters and theorize beyond canon. You can disagree with their reasoning , but it's petty and immature to sit there and rage about how wrong they are.

I hate when people make generalizations about fanfic things like AUs and crossovers. If someone were to say "They all suck" I'd say something. However when someone says something like "I've found most AUs/crossovers I've read to be badly written and pointless/uninteresting, so I don't read them" , I just say "I understand".

Because I can tell the difference between "they suck people should stop writing them" and "I really don't like this kind of fanfic, It bores me/lacks appeal." I don't really see how anyone can really say the latter approach is wrong as long as the person is talking about in relevance to their interest and taste.

That's basically what OP is saying here. Like if someone argued with people every time they said they choose not to read "Canon/OC" everyone would make fun of that person for being oversensitive. But someone posts a secret saying "I prefer to consider canon the authority I go by/ only ship OCs", making it obvious that it's a personal preference, and you are all "BUT YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG"

Hi again OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

ITT: butthurt fanboys/fangirls

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Now you're not even making sense, OP. Try harder.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay AYRT is not me.

And again, I am not the secret submitter. Just someone who doesn't see the point in getting defensive bout one person's shipping preferences and way of interpreting media.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
OP isn't suggesting a way of interpreting media, they're against any interpretation that isn't from the original author. So I'm assuming they're not a fan of film, or adaptation, and older literary works must drive them nuts.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm not even involved in this thread (flat view best view), but "hi OP" is the laziest form of criticism

you're trying less than i am and i don't even know what this thread is about

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh please, like any of this is worth NOT being lazy for.

It's not even a lazy form of criticism. Being a lazy form of criticism would mean there was something resembling criticism in there.

What it is is a lazy attempt at making a passive-aggressive content-free insult.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
So you clearly don't see 'only the original author's vision is worth caring about' as judgmental of everyone who thinks/does differently.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I see the "in my mind, only the original author's vision is worth caring about" and see it to mean "Personally I only am interested in the original author".

I think assuming that that explicitly means judging everyone who thinks or does it differently and that's the ONLY right interpretation comes off as someone who's looking to be offended.

I see OP as someone who just doesn't feel like getting too deep into fandom and all the fandom ships and theories. They could be confessing it for any number of reasons , maybe all their friends are in fandom, or maybe they feel weird about being only interested in doing it this way. Sure, wanting to send a message of judgement to everyone in the comm could be a reason... but if someone were doing that they probably would word it differently.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You can't look to be offended. You either are or you're not. I am, you're not, that's all there is to it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
For someone critical of other people assuming things, you're doing an awful lot of it yourself.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I got from that statement too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Chill.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-16 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
ugh blooo blooo

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Chill, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
go get' em tiger

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
And I see you making these long, rambling posts because you're upset that people disagree with something posted on fandomsecrets and wonder why the hell you're accusing OTHER people of looking for things to be upset about.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
"I fail to see the appeal of picturing elaborate fantasies about characters that are someone else's property."

"Fanworks feel pointless."

Those are some pretty big generalizations about fandom.

And it's still kind of funny how you keep saying you know what OP's saying when you're apparently not OP. Because if you're not, then you don't know, any more than anyone else in this thread does.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
nayrt but i agree with them. those read very clearly to me as being specifically about the OP's personal attitude towards things, not a general judgment on fandom. OP is just saying they personally don't understand. it's incredibly clear from context that the whole paragraph there is specifically them talking about their own attitude, not passing judgment on anyone else.

in fact, TBH, I don't think it's even possible to call either of those statements a generalization about fandom.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Except it's patently not clear when a whole bunch of people in this thread have taken it differently to you.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 01:04 pm (UTC)(link)
in fact, TBH, I don't think it's even possible to call either of those statements a generalization about fandom.

...how? How on earth is it not even possible to you to call "fanworks are pointless" a generalization about fandom? Fandom almost completely revolves around fanworks. I'll grant you OP is only talking about his or her own personal preference, but to say that calling the backbone of fandom "pointless" can't possibly be speaking about fandom in general is...ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-17 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that OP said "fanworks feel pointless." It's a generalization, sure, but it's OP's own personal generalization and it was phrased as such. World of difference between that and stating that they are pointless, full stop.
