[Hockey RPF, Patrick Kane]

blackface is wrong but i'm not sure if declaring everlasting hatred against someone is the only appropriate response to it

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
The Bulls have a fandom - as in, a fandom that has "woobies" and whatnot, not just typical sports fans/team supporters?

Why was this player going around in blackface, anyway?

Why is there a person named Nail? Is it at least pronounced Nai-eel or something?

Hockey fandom. Patrick Kane was dressing up as a Chicago Bull for Halloween

at least, that's what I surmise, I don't actually know that

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
I see... he's wearing blackface because he's dressed as a BASKETBALL player. Okay then.

Well, Dennis Rodman, to be specific, I think

but yeah, as far as I can tell, that seems to be what's going on

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Could have just gone in the bridal dress if he wanted to play Dennis Rodman for Halloween.

Nail is Russian, and had this to say about pronunciation:

‘Nail’ is good. I drives me nuts when people try to pronounce my name the proper way. Everybody acts super funny and end up with something like ‘Nah-eel’ (which is not 100% accurate). So I tell everyone: ‘You can call me Nail. It’s easier for you, and it’s better for me’.

(His dad's name is Rail. I'm not even kidding)

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder whether other RPF will inevitably go the way of J2 fic, and just have less and less to do with anything actually real...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
That's Adam Burish in the picture. Patrick's in the same picture (yeah, in blackface), but you cropped him out.

Patrick Kane is an idiot. A lot of rich white dudes are. If you're gonna be in sports RPF fandom, it comes with the territory. It's no excuse, but I doubt they were trying to be racists. I'd bet most ignorant white people who do blackface aren't trying to be racists. They're just ignorant. I didn't know why blackface was an issue until, like, last year. And that's with being in the ultra social justice aware world that is fandom. Still, uh... this happened in 2009 when he was 19 years old, before the fandom had even picked up. So, yeah.

'I know i sound like a SJW'

So you hesitate to point out the right thing - how it's wrong - because of that...?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
That made me raise an eyebrow, too.

Pointing out that "blackface is wrong" doesn't make you an SJW.

It makes you... not a neonazi or racist douchebag?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Cue a bunch of Australians and Europeans arguing that blackface is actually totally fine

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm Australian and it is NOT TOTALLY FINE FUCK EVERYONE WHO SAYS IT IS

We *do* have a nasty blackface tradition, though not as widespread as the US one, and golliwogs are not okay either.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
There are instances in European traditions that would be considered blackface by uninformed Americans but have a vastly different and much much older background and can't be measured by US standards just because you fucked that particular thing up.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 09:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because blackface is an American concept of a particular thing that happened in America. You can't measure everything by American standards, not even racism.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
+1

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
it's wrong

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Blackface as what it means in America, yes. Someone painting his face black for other reasons than to ridicule a black person, such as cosplay, not necessarily, and shouldn't be called blackface.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Why are we all ignoring the Australian in this thread?
mishey22: (Default)

[personal profile] mishey22 2014-11-18 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
That's Adam Burish, not Patrick Kane. He was there too, but he isn't the one that's being pointed out.

Also, this was in 2009, and there was loads of outrage when it happened, so I don't see how it was swept under the rug, or, rather, that there's amnesia about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
SJWs.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 09:41 am (UTC)(link)
Don't you know you have to hate someone for doing something SJ unacceptable forever, no matter how long ago it is, even if they apologise.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 04:06 pm (UTC)(link)
People have short memories and can very easily be fooled into thinking that something happened years ago either just happened or never happened at all.

Case in point: during the recent US election, people started spreading around articles about a law regarding birth control that went up for vote in Arizona two years ago, and saying that it was happening right now and we need to fight this, guys! It was mind-boggling, especially since all of the articles had, you know, dates on them.
