She isn't the only thing I'll miss, but she's at the top followed closely by Jaina (who is pretty much the only good thing about the NJO and post era). Thrawn would be there too.

Really, though, Corran is considered more of a sue, and I'll really miss him too.

I'm excited for the new movies, but I'd love it if the Zahn and Stackpoole books would be canon. The others can go away.

The X wing books/comics should also stay canon. Wedge Antilles is one of my top fictional heroes and I may or may not have named several consecutive goldfish after him in my younger days

I do love Mara and Jaina. I think the Dark Nest Trilogy was the last of the books I read, but Zahn and Stackpole's books will always be my favorite by far. I really wish I could read more of the post-NJO for Jaina but the storyline went way off course for my liking.

The X-Wing books were the best, I think Starfighters of Adumar was my favorite.

mmm, nice han solo icon

Right there with you. Totally loved Mara and thought her character was well done. Thrawn and Pellaeon were great antagonists along with Ysanne Isard. The rest, not so much. I'm going to miss the Noghri and pretty much everything with Wedge and Tycho and Winter.

Stackpole and Zahn are my favorite authors in the EU but with the rest of the mess that exists out there I can understand why Disney would choose to scrap the rest of the EU. I mean seriously so much mess.

Her relationship with Luke was good, wasn't it? I did like that quite a bit. She's definitely one of the best bits of the EU.

Man, there aren't even words for how much I'll miss Mara (and Jacen pre-Sith fuckery, and Jaina, and Thrawn, and and and). She's by far my favorite SW character, and she has some stiff competition. I'm going to have such cognitive dissidence if they marry Luke off to someone else in the films.

I fell out of the loop well before Mara and Luke became a thing, but I liked her character well enough back in those days. At least we'll have the memories :p.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
People don't like Mara? Huh, I like her fine.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Mara Jade is targeted with so much hate it isn't even funny.

Mostly from right winger women who see her as "edgy" mary sue and a slut who is a stripper and who slept with the Emperor (which shows how much they actually know about Mara's character.)

Mara was imo one of the best things to come out of the EU and is one of the top reasons that I refuse to acknowledge the new non-canonicity of the EU.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
They're retconning Mara Jade? I really liked her! Idiots.

She didn't seem too much like a Mary Sue in the novels I read, but perhaps she was in others?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Good riddance she was just a lame Shira Brie rip-off anyways.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 05:51 pm (UTC)(link)
*smirks* At least Shira Brie is also being retconned along with Mara bitch. *satisfied smirk*

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Right?

Though I only loved Mara up until Vision of the Future. I was so disappointed she ended up with Luke.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
pff, i shipped her with luke in the thrawn-trilogy and thought they would be awesome together. i was right.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I was so disappointed Mara and Lando didn't end up together!

I thought people loved Mara Jade

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
People consider her a Mary Sue? Really?

Maybe Mary Sues are trying to be what Mara Jade actually was. A cool girlfriend character actually liked by fandom.

There's people out there who absolutely hate her.

They see her as a fanfic OC paired with Luke, and call her a slut and an "edgy" mary sue, so on.

Mara is awesome, and anyone who says otherwise can go jump in a lake.

What I'm most frustrated with right now is the ambiguity surrounding some of the earlier, pre-Ruusan Old Republic era material - everything around the Rakata, the Je'daii Order, and the formation of the Republic itself, through all the history of the Sith (species and Empire) wars with the Republic... none of that history is necessarily incompatible with the movies, but none of it has been officially accepted either. It makes a lot of details that were created for that era to be in a weird sort of limbo - for instance, cortosis was invented (as far as I can recall) for Knights of the Old Republic, as an excuse for why swords and armor can stand up to lightsabers at all. Yet it also shows up in Star Wars: A New Dawn, which is the first officially-canon book (and is a nice prequel to Rebels, which is awesome). In the book, a cyberneticly-enhanced person has a cortosis weave in his skin, and if you shoot him with a blaster, the energy is conducted around his body. It's not exactly the same properties as described in the games, books, and comics, but that can be handwaved away as processing variations - if, that is, it's supposed to be the same stuff.

I understand why Disney decided to toss out everything in the EU that's near or after the movies - at this point it's a monolith of contradictory details and timelines and even Wookieepedia can't keep it all straight. But dammit, I will be mad if they explicitly contradict a lot of the distant history that I like so much. :( And I really, really hope that the vague, general shape of the post-movies universe still makes sense - that Luke still brought back the Jedi, and Leia and Han got married, and the New Republic got formed, because seriously, if they try to not do at least those few things I'm going to swear off the rest of the movies and live in my own little bubble of Legends-is-canon-hell-with-you. (Except for the Yuuzhon Vong, which I never liked; my canon ends just before New Jedi Order starts.)

...I apparently have Feelings on this topic.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here, OP.

I have absolutely no interest in the new stuff anyways.

I'm not convinced that Mara Jade won't be in the new movies, given how popular she is. Things might not be exactly the same as they were in the EU but I still would be more surprised if she doesn't make an appearance than if she does.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-29 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Mara Jade (though I would be okay with her not being paired with Luke), Thrawn, and weirdly, the ysalamiri are all things I will miss. Zahn's original trilogy really was the best.
