Before I got into my first relationship I always thought "if you were a couple you should also be able to stay friends after it's over because there must have been a reason you once loved each other, right?" But now, after two relationships, I've ended up wanting your first option both times because there was also a reason we broke up and that overshadows most oft the good memories for me.

Same over here. Our breakup was mutual and amicable and we were decently friends for about a year, but then it gradually fell apart until I absolutely loathed her. It would have been rougher initially to cut off contact from the start, but I think it would have been less painful in the long run. I still harbor a lot of actively negative feelings I'd rather be rid of.
