It depends on the individual. Honestly I made a point to only date people who were respectful, so I've actually never went through a horrendous breakup with any of my exes. We decided to end things and stayed in touch. I would never do a Ross/Rachel situation with any ex though; that's a trainwreck of drama and misery waiting to happen. To me exes stay exes for a reason.
