Re: Unpopular opinions

It pisses me off when I look at an animal shelter, and it's full of nothing but mixed breed puppies.

I have no problem with mixed breed puppies, but it just makes me think that there must have been some irresponsible pet owner who thought, "Let's not neuter/spay our dogs and see what babies they make!" and didn't realize how much work keeping puppies would be, or just decided they'd dump the puppies at a shelter because it was easier than finding homes for the puppies. I realize this is all terrible assumption-making on my part, and I have no real reason to believe this is the case (could have been two stray dogs instead for all I know), but I can't help but think some puppies now have to live in a cage because of some dumbass' lack of foresight.

uhhhhh

many shelter dogs are strays, and strays don't give a shit what breed they're fucking

and people who are irresponsible and don't spay/neuter and then dump their puppies are not limited to purebreed owners

mixed breeds have been around for a long time, they're not new. not every mutt (which is a term I use endearingly, to be clear) comes from two pure-bred parents; in fact I'd guess most don't. It actually takes effort now to keep dogs pure because of all the inbreeding and the fact that "accidents" happen so easily with un-fixed dogs.

I'm well aware of all of this.

And I never said irresponsible pet owners were limited to purebred owners. It could also include already mixed breeds.

I just said with all the mixed puppies in the shelters, it just seems like it's due to irresponsible owners. And I'm well aware that assumption could be wrong.

On top of what diet_poison already said, you should be aware that purebred dogs have a ton of health problems (and it makes sense, if you think about it. What happens when a small group of genetically similar humans just keeps breeding with only each other? Also, a lot of breeds were created with a specific purpose in mind, and the people who created them weren't thinking about the unintended consequences of selecting certain traits and eliminating others). It's more irresponsible to insist that people breed their dogs only with dogs of the same type than it is to mix breeds.

Why are you telling me this? I didn't say a word about purebred dogs being any better than mixed breeds. I've done my research on many purebreds and I know the host of problems some of them do have (bulldogs can't give birth naturally, many dogs prone to hip dysplasia). I'm just saying it seems to me a bunch of mixed breeds end up in a shelter because some people neuter/spay their dogs and then just don't care about the result. And I also said that may not be the reason they are in the shelter, that it could just be strays.
