I have a genuine and vehement personal dislike of anti-vaxxers. I don't think I could ever be friends with someone who even felt like it was open for discussion.

This thread is called unpopular opinions. Not popular ones, haha.

Eh, I know anti-vaxxers aren't popular here, but I know a ton of people who would object to the idea of being so opposed to a "political" belief that you wouldn't be friends with someone who held the opposite POV.

(Political in quotes because I think it's an ethical decision, not just a political one.)

Most people would agree in a vacuum that you shouldn't stop being friends with someone because of their political beliefs, but anti-vaxxers are so virulently hated right now that I think those views get short-circuited.

Eh, maybe I am a little more radical, then, because I can think of a lot of political views that I would consider, personally, ethical stances, and I would find it hard to be friends with someone who disagreed with me. For example: gay marriage, abortion, homelessness, treatment of mental illness. I have family members who probably disagree with me, but I really don't think I could be close friends with someone who did. Anti-vaccination is one of a suite of topics.

this is so counter-productive though.

If I met an adult who was genuinely anti-vax, and they had kids, I'd be worried about their kids. I'd want to change the anti-vaxxer's mind, not alienate them.

(I also have a cousin who hasn't vaccinated his three kids. His mom, my aunt, is really worried about them. Should he be alienated? I hope he changes his mind. I hope there's something our family can do.)

I'm not saying they shouldn't be talked to or reasoned with. I'm saying that personally I don't think I could or would want to form a close personal bond with them. I could talk to and be friendly to someone who believed that. But that's where it stops. I don't think it's my personal responsibility to befriend people with shitty opinions to change their minds either, I guess. Though family is a slightly different scenario.

(And to be perfectly honest, yeah, I'm okay with you being alienated from people if you make a wildly irresponsible and hurtful choice like that.)

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply you were obligated to befriend anyone. I guess I misread your comment - I thought you were just shutting people down right away.
