I think this is probably an unpopular opinion, but I think some fans have their slash goggles screwed on a little too tightly. I mean, I think it's fun to interrogate the material and see slash where you can and squee and stuff, but some fans take it to a level that makes me uncomfortable for their grip on rationality. E.g., they will take some fan-service jokes the actors make at cons and say, "See? They're playing them gay for each other!" When, in fact, no: the actors were just being nice and making a joke for the fans. They are in no way altering the way the characters are written to act as if they are in love with each other when at the same time one of them has a female love interest in the scene.

It kind of upsets me because I don't like to see people slipping over the edge like that.

related: probably like 90, 95 percent of complaints about queerbaiting in fandom specifically are bullshit

reboot spirk fans do that with Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine, or things the writers said not to even mention jokes made by reviews.
They hate on Zachary now because he openly stated that he doesn't like spirk and doesn't think it's canon, after he got asked about it for the 100th time. Note that the fans were inappropriate because they made the question about him and Chris being in love too, not just the fictional characters.

Yeah, the hate is the flip side, when the fans don't get what they want.
