I am guessing a lot of people who are Fëanor fans want to project the awesome they see in him onto the mother he was so attached to. I know I do it a bit.

Also, if you have ever looked up "The Shibboleth of Fëanor", it at least expands a tiny bit, giving implication that Míriel stayed around long enough to raise Fëanor and was strong-willed enough to get picky at people who called her "Serindë" (the whole of Shibboleth is about a language shift that changed Þ (a TH sound) into an S).

It's not much, but there's a few hints that she could have been a great character, but in the end you're right that it's not much to base a massive fannish obsession on.

I've fangirled characters for less than Míriel has about her.
