[The Silmarillion]

Sounds like the tumble token-worship of any character that is woman or poc, to get the social justice points.

social justice points? caring about women in literature is a game now? when did that happen?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's how people who don't care for female characters try to explain it. "They like this female character because of social justice points!" I dunno...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Making noise about how some random female or POC character is sooooo perfect and amazing and people don't give them enough love is a performative game, yes. It provides SJ cover for the performer to continue her obsession with making white penises kiss.

Kind of, yeah.

Love all the female characters! Love as many female characters as you can! Love the female characters whose personalities you hate, because everyone knows you love that personality as long as it belongs to a hot male! Love the female characters that are badly written as a form of protest against the writers who wrote them badly, because you know you don't care when male characters are badly written as long as they're hot! Love the female character that shows up on the screen for one second to wave at the main character and is never seen or spoken of again (she had so much potential, and you know if she was a guy you'd be tapping that potential)! GOTTA LOVE EM ALL!

I love a lot of female characters. But I love them because I actually love them as characters. Tumblr is full of this empty "look at this perfect goddess!!1" bullshit. Throw out a couple of those token phrases for the female/poc character, and you've obtained your superior social justice points, I guess (even though nearly all your blog and actual fangirling is about the white male characters).
I also refer to it as the Lupita Nyong'o syndrome. My dash is full of people occasionally reblogging picture sets of her and gushing about how "flawless" and how much of a "queen" she is, and how much "they love her omg!!". I doubt most of those people don't actually know a single fucking fact about her, or give a thought about her in their actual life.

Unfortunately the Silmarillion fandom is very very guilty of this. All the ladies are sooooo amazing and important and if you don't care about them you're awful.

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-11-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I think a lot of it has to do with how few women there are in Tolkien and how even fewer of them are actually important characters. When people love the world but really want awesome women, sometimes people imagine characters as more important than they are. It doesn't bother me except when it becomes the "if you don't care about them you're awful" thing. Otherwise people can like who they like and I don't see the problem.

Sounds more like the influence of Catholicism to me, though of course the fandom as a whole isn't Catholic...

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-11-18 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Why can't people like who they like? I don't think she's the most interesting character, but whatever floats someone's boat. As long as it isn't bashing and isn't interfering with anyone else's enjoyment I don't see the problem.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe her fans are all just thirsty embroidery enthusiasts?

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by this. I haven't seen much of it but I know the Feanorians are very popular. I just read a forum debate not too long ago where the Feanorian-lovers insisted that the first kinslaying was totally justified because of the Oath -- their logic is that since Feanor declared that he would kill anyone who got between him and his jewels and the Teleri were withholding their boats (thus getting in the way), Feanor was justified and it was a fight in a war, not an unprovoked slaughter. I was just O_o.

I do think that if you've read HoME, there's a bit more to Miriel. It's been a while but in at least one version, Tolkien writes her as a bit of a bitch. But then Finwe's an ass in that one too; he seems very entitled. But Tolkien also wrote a version where Miriel is reborn and Finwe stays in Mandos, so Indis and Miriel can hang out. She has about as much characterization as a lot of popular characters in the Silmarillion. I think part of being in this fandom is to embrace thinly-sketched characters. That's what you have in Tolkien. (Not all characters, of course).

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-11-18 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this. I don't get the way people justify the actions of the Feanorians. I find them interesting as characters, and some of them more complex and less bad then others (Celebrimbor mostly, and Maedros went through some horrible stuff himself), but the kinslaying was pretty bad. Then again, Tolkien himself tried to keep his favorites out of the kinslaying thing. I mean, he went out of his way to make sure Galadriel wasn't involved in that.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
That right there is what irritates me to no end and made me intensely dislike Galadriel. The idea that Celeborn (or now Teleporno) was a Teleri Elf instead of a Sindar Elf and that he and Galadriel were going to go by boat or whatever -- just this HUGE workaround to make it so she was better than all the other Noldor -- really annoys me. I don't want to say Mary Sue but it comes to mind.

She will always be a kinslayer to me with blood on her hands. LOTR doesn't make much sense otherwise.

I don't know what the fan worship is based on, or about, or whatever, but I kind of admire her for having the backbone to say no, she is not coming back to life, no matter how lonely/horny Finwe is or what sort of irrational idolatry Feanor has built up around her. She is 500% done with kingly Noldor shit.

And a wise choice it was, too.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Wtf, man. She wasn't "done with kingly Noldor shit" because she was so cool. She was depressed and didn't want to live anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Silmarillion fandom seems to be based on projecting onto characters with barely any characterization.
philstar22: (Default)

[personal profile] philstar22 2014-11-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
This is very, very true. Many of the characters only have a few lines (or less) about them. The Silmarillion is history. It is about creating the world and the main events in it, not about characterization. There are some things you can get from the book and some things that are logical assumptions, but a lot of it is people's own personal headcanon about the character.

I'm a huge embroidery fan. It's a beautiful skill that requires a high level of patience and creativity. Is it not a trait worthy of loving characters for?

I am guessing a lot of people who are Fëanor fans want to project the awesome they see in him onto the mother he was so attached to. I know I do it a bit.

Also, if you have ever looked up "The Shibboleth of Fëanor", it at least expands a tiny bit, giving implication that Míriel stayed around long enough to raise Fëanor and was strong-willed enough to get picky at people who called her "Serindë" (the whole of Shibboleth is about a language shift that changed Þ (a TH sound) into an S).

It's not much, but there's a few hints that she could have been a great character, but in the end you're right that it's not much to base a massive fannish obsession on.

I've fangirled characters for less than Míriel has about her.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-18 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, this is the Silmarillion. Most characters show up for a few lines and then disappear forever. And it's okay to be fond of them, regardless of screen time.

And Miriel's actions had a really deep impact on the story, and not just because she gave birth to Feanor. She also stuck to her guns in the fact of enormous social pressure. And embroidery is art, and you sound kind of misogynistic, OP, for dismissing an important character because of her traditional feminine skills and her status as someone's mum.
