Making noise about how some random female or POC character is sooooo perfect and amazing and people don't give them enough love is a performative game, yes. It provides SJ cover for the performer to continue her obsession with making white penises kiss.

Love all the female characters! Love as many female characters as you can! Love the female characters whose personalities you hate, because everyone knows you love that personality as long as it belongs to a hot male! Love the female characters that are badly written as a form of protest against the writers who wrote them badly, because you know you don't care when male characters are badly written as long as they're hot! Love the female character that shows up on the screen for one second to wave at the main character and is never seen or spoken of again (she had so much potential, and you know if she was a guy you'd be tapping that potential)! GOTTA LOVE EM ALL!

I love a lot of female characters. But I love them because I actually love them as characters. Tumblr is full of this empty "look at this perfect goddess!!1" bullshit. Throw out a couple of those token phrases for the female/poc character, and you've obtained your superior social justice points, I guess (even though nearly all your blog and actual fangirling is about the white male characters).
I also refer to it as the Lupita Nyong'o syndrome. My dash is full of people occasionally reblogging picture sets of her and gushing about how "flawless" and how much of a "queen" she is, and how much "they love her omg!!". I doubt most of those people don't actually know a single fucking fact about her, or give a thought about her in their actual life.

This female character is a goddess!! Unless she has flaws or does something I don't approve of!! I don't want female characters to be people, I want toys up on a pedestal.

This also strikes me as a pretty harmful attitude, seeing as no one is actually "flawless". The whole trend of calling people "perfect" "queens" is a bit scary.

In a sense, it almost removes the character's (or celebrity's) humanity. It's like they're not actual people, but an object to place on a pedestal.

You've put your finger on why I find it so scary.

Most women-hating men I've met claimed they loved women and saw them as goddesses. One stumble off that pedestal, however, and the woman was ground underfoot as a betraying bitch and punished forever.

I hate to see that attitude reflected among women on tumblr.

This has been going on a lot longer than tumblr. Women, real and fictional, are always held up to higher standards than men and mostly by other women. Women can't just be people, they have to be "role models", even if they never intended to be. One misstep and it's over for them, they're irredeemable and can never do anything to make it up. Time to move on to the next "perfect goddess", until she isn't.

I have noticed that men are starting to get this treatment, too. It may have been going on for a while, but I've only seen it recently.

Damn. Apt comparison. So many times have I heard some guy claim he "loves women" because of how beautiful, perfect, and nurturing we are. (Even better, the "I live women because I love having sex with them!") It's dehumanizing.

Unfortunately the Silmarillion fandom is very very guilty of this. All the ladies are sooooo amazing and important and if you don't care about them you're awful.

Well, I think a lot of it has to do with how few women there are in Tolkien and how even fewer of them are actually important characters. When people love the world but really want awesome women, sometimes people imagine characters as more important than they are. It doesn't bother me except when it becomes the "if you don't care about them you're awful" thing. Otherwise people can like who they like and I don't see the problem.

There's definitely not very much to go on with Tolkien women. Eowyn was the only one with a proper storyline in LotR. Even Galadriel was much mistier on the page than she was in the movies.

It's human nature to extrapolate in a way that suits your own tastes. Thus, Tolkien women become wonderful and perfect.

I just don't undertstand why you would get into a canon only to focus on something that is so minuscule in that canon that you have to make everything up about it yourself. If you want awesome female characters, maybe the Silmarillion isn't the fandom for you. Just like Generation Kill or The Pacific is probably not the fandom for you. And if you just want to write OCs, then just admit that you want to write OCs instead of grabbing a barely existent minor character and going on about how important they are.

I'm not one of the people. I just don't understand why you care. They aren't getting in the way of your enjoyment of what you like. Bashing people for not liking those characters is a different thing, but I don't see a problem with people liking what they like in peace.

Sounds more like the influence of Catholicism to me, though of course the fandom as a whole isn't Catholic...
