If I had to guess, I'd say that it came from basically someone trying to "other" a particular character they didn't like. Sorta like discontinuity on a particular character instead of an episode/book. "This character isn't doesn't even "count" they might as well be like someone's OC in the canon".

IA that it's dumb. Sorry people, but your "unfave" IS actually apart of the canon.

Unless they're referring to a character created and added like the anon above mentioned. I believe that's a more right use of the term. And depending how it's pulled off, it doesn't have to be a bad thing. If the character added is good then who cares?
