I think it depends on when you try to be friends again, too. You can't do it out of the gate if the split's anything other than harmonious, because there's still hard feelings there - at least one party's going to be hurt by a non-mutual breakup, and depending on the reasoning, both parties might be nursing bruised feelings.

If you decide to take the friends route after the hurt feelings have had time to heal, it can work out a lot better. It's trying to force it immediately that causes a lot of the problems.
