31. This might be a bit offtopic, but it's just something that's been on my mind lately; what's with all the 'Vic's a homophobe!!' I've been hearing? From what I understood, all he said was he thinks Fay is straight; considering that the manga (and anime) hasn't given us any canon Fay-coupling yet (I don't really consider Fay/Kurogane as it's been nothing but subtext for me, and a matter that which can mean nothing, romantically at least, in the long run). I'd understand the hate if Fay/Kurogane or some other guy has been canonically established, but as for now, nothing has been set in stone.

Of course, I'm not really sure what Vic exactly said, most of what I heard are from merely hearsay, so, guys, correct me if I'm wrong then.

Ugh, TL;DR, sorry.

I don't really think Vic is a homophobe, though it is debatable, but he has made some incredibly rude comments towards fans who like boy/boy pairings from long before he was even involved in Tsubasa, but Tsubasa was what pushed a lot of fans over the edge and got the largest reaction (because it's one thing to say things about, say, Roy/Ed which has no solid grounding, as opposed to Kuro/Fai which does.) He basically said that any fan who liked that sort of relationship was a preoccupied yaoi crazed fangirl who distorts and perverts the character and ruins the series and ruins the character and destroys the creator's intention and ladadada. He compared it to destroying a painting or something like that.
The whole Vic's a homophobe thing seems to stem from the mentality that anyone who dislikes yaoi is a homophobe.

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
That is rather rude to his fanbase, which is surprising (and ironic) considering how approachable he is with his relationship WITH his fanbase.

But as classless as that is, it sounds more like he's anti-yaoi than homophobic, which, yeah, people love to confuse the the two or claim they are synonymous.

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
He is very anti-yaoi and makes no secret of it, which really isn't a problem, but it's the way he handles it that annoys me to no end. He says that we all are allowed to have opinions and that we need to respect each other, but then he turns around and just acts completely rude about it and very insulting. =/

But yes, he's never really shown any outright homophobia, just anti-yaoi, but I honestly wouldn't be too surprised if he is homophobic.

[identity profile] halcyonjazz.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm not saying he's not being a douchebag by saying those comments. From the sounds of it it looks like he's stereotyping anyone who likes yaoi/slash as a crazed yaoi fangirl and that is amazingly disrespectful. Which, again, SHOCKING, since he's so fan-friendly (I emailed him once! He even kept a conversation thread with me for about 5 replies, that was very surprising!)

Whether he's homophobic or not, I can't say, but being anti-yaoi =/= homophobia. Either way I still respect his voicework a lot (I was a fan of his back when he did Gawl in Generator Gawl) and he only improved to amazing levels (holy crap, his work as Junpei in Persona 3!), I can only imagine what else he'll bring to the table.

Is there a link to where he's said this, btw? Either on youtube or in a text interview somewhere? :o

[identity profile] bodyline.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
He's apparently said to fans that he's spoken to personally through e-mail that he does know not all yaoi/slash fans are crazy, but he's never really acted that way publicly in con and stuff.

I think he did a good job as Edward but I really just am not impressed with his voice work elsewhere. I didn't like his Fai, Dark, or Yukito, and I'm not really jumping up to look for his other works. I think he has the potential to be great but...

Go to YouTube and look up 'vic mignogna yaoi' and you'll get about 36 results. D:

(Anonymous) 2007-12-24 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not to butt in, but I think my biggest problem (and this may be an issue with others, too, which is why I bring it up.) is that he's 'hypocritical' about it. Fan-service is all well and good, and sweet of an actor but to run around doing cute little 'Roy/Ed' jokes and lines at cons... and then to follow them with tangents about yaoi being wrong bad example with that pairing, I know, because it has wrong written all over it for a number of reasons.

but I guess my point is, if you're going to hate it that's one thing. If you're going to do the fanservice that's another thing. But the number of times he's given a fan-service like quote, he seems to constantly follow them up with long rants about how Ed can't possibly be gay. The yaoi fans know he dislikes it, greatly. They're not going to change their minds, just because you preach about it.

the short and sweet: Maybe he thinks doing the fan-service is making him a great guy, and it's nice to think of the fans and all. but I think it takes away from doing the fanservice if you're going to lecture your fans every time. Maybe if it makes him uncomfortable, he should stop.

EXACTLY.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-24 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you sure that's what he said though? Unless you yourself heard him say those things, I'd take them with a grain of salt. Most of hearsays and word of mouths are not accurate after all. I'm not trying to be antagonistic here, I'm just really wary of rumors and all the exaggeration that go with them.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
With regards to all this... I actually had the nerve to go to one of his Q&A sessions at a recent con (cosplaying as Fai, no less) and ask him, "Given that CLAMP has a lot of homosexual themes in their work, and given that there is mounting evidence that Fai isn't exactly straight in the manga, what's your take on his sexuality?" It put him on the spot and he kind of laughed nervously before launching into his theories about how he thinks Fai is straight. From what I can tell, he perceives homosexuality as dirty and he thinks that pairing straight characters with characters of the same gender is like destroying the integrity of those characters.

He claimed to have met CLAMP personally and that they said Fai was not gay with Kurogane (several friends of mine call bullshit on this because CLAMP rarely make time to talk to fans at cons, let alone voice actors). I asked, "Now, Tsubasa wasn't licensed two years ago when you and CLAMP were both at Anime Expo, and you don't read manga, so why would you ask about Tsubasa?" He retorted that it was Colleen Clinkenbeard who asked them the question. I still call bullshit nonetheless. I then persisted by saying that, in the manga universe, Fai and Kurogane are practically soulmates at this point, and he responded very rudely, with something along the lines of "I don't think they're SCREWING." I was pretty insulted by this, and said, "Homosexuality does not necessarily imply 'screwing.'" He said that western anime fandom adds a sexual element to a lot of pairings and therefore his reasoning was valid, and I said, "I find that offensive" (that he was implying that homosexuality always = sex). "I find that offensive too!" he said, and at this point he was either backtracking or misinterpreted what I said. RAGE. He then went on blabbering about how manga is different from anime, he doesn't make manga, blah blah blah, we have different opinions, his opinion is no more important than mine, blah blah. He then tried to save face by taking one more question so as "not to end the panel on a bad note." [/copypasta from my LJ]

tl;dr I'm sure he did think of me as some kind of militant yaoi fangirl, but I was out to prove my point that no matter how much evidence there is in favour of one of "his" characters being homosexual, he'll stick by his mantra of "STRAIGHT UNTIL PROVEN GAY."

[identity profile] linen-tartaruga.livejournal.com 2007-12-24 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't heard the exact quote about the Fai/Kurogane thing, but there was a clip on youtube from a convention where he was asked about the possible Roy/Ed hints in the FullMetal Alchemist movie and he basically says that he feels that the relationship between Roy and Ed is a father-son thing but then goes off into a schpiel about how writing yaoi fanart and fanfic is like taking a painting and then drawing "all this garbage" all over it with crayons. *Runs off to find the link*

Here you go. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=tFFETn67w6c)

Personally, I can understand him getting frustrated after going to convention after convention and having to be asked the same questions over and over again about Roy and Ed and probably Kurogane and Fai as well, but that was a little out of line, if you ask me. I still love his work, but I just won't be watching any more panel discussions with him about yaoi anymore.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-24 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could go into details, but it'd give me away.

I work for a major convention that refuses to invite him back because he was such a dick. A top-10 con blackballs you? that's srs bznss right there.

His fangirls keep raiding our bulletin board demanding his return. I really want to tell them to find a better idol and exactly why they should, but it wouldn't be very professional :/

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2007-12-25 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Otakon?

Good job keeping him out. Sure, he pulls in more fans, but how many damn Vic-worshipping fanbrats do you need at one con?
