(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 11:39 am (UTC)(link)For me, every kudo, every comment, every review, every favorite, and every follow is precious. So what if someone is doing it just to be nice. Could they be doing it to make themselves feel good? Sure, but I even like that idea. Because I like people being happy.
I deal with depression and being told I'm a waste of life every single day. Even an "I liked it" comment helps smooth over the nasty comments I get IRL, which the reviewer couldn't possibly know, but it reminds me why I'm still here on earth. And if the motive for leaving that comment is selfish, I honestly don't care. It's there, and I reread it to keep myself motivated.
Sheesh...

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)I'd feel the same way. It would send my self-esteem plummeting to get a comment out of pity from someone who hadn't even read the work. If a comment is totally hollow, then that really doesn't help anything. I'm operating from a false perspective if I attach any meaning to it.
And yep, I'll also be looking at every comment that doesn't actually mention something fic-specific in a new light now after finding out this is a thing people actually do (you can argue that "it's only OP that does it!" but if OP does it and brags about it here then you can bet there are other people doing the same thing). Which sucks.

(Anonymous) 2014-11-19 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)It's really not cynicism. It's that you have an understanding that someone who makes any sort of judgement on your work, be it positive or negative, is actually bothering to read or engage with your work.
Maybe empty praise helps your depression, but for some of us it makes it a million times worse.

People do charity to feel better about themselves, people save wales to feel superior, people help each other because in apes it shows a high status...
