Ummm…where have you been looking? There's TONS of K/S that doesn't feature mind melds. I would say it's more common in TOS fic though so maybe look into reboot fic (if you're into that)?

I've looked mostly on AO3 and the K/S archive. Is this a Tumblr thing?

I think this might have been more of an oldschool trope. Maybe try some more recently-written fic?

My problem is more the "bondmate" thing than the mind melds, but yeah, sometimes I just want more human-variety K/S smut.

See, I agree it can be overdone, but at the same time I like fic that doesn't gloss over that aspect of it. Because what you mean by "normal" sex is actually human sex, and I like it when fics acknowledge that Spock (Vulcans in general) don't necessarily approach intimacy the same way.

Kissing is lip-to-lip kissing for humans, and fingertip-to-fingertip for Vulcans. I like when fics make it a point for Kirk and Spock to both get something out of the encounter. Like, Kirk probably doesn't get anything out of touching his fingertips to Spock's, other than the knowledge that Spock does get something out of it (which is enough!).

The mind meld is supposed to be an intensely personal thing, so it's plausible to say Spock would want to use it during sex. (Using it as he often does on the show, to get information, etc, is actually a bit of a taboo, iirc. Kirk's a bad influence on him =P)

But it does get tiresome when every other fic out there decides they have some sacred bond, and somehow it's all described in exactly the same way and has the same effects and consequences. Fandom hivemind at its best/worst.

I kind of feel like K/S is full of so many re-used tropes (the mind-meld being one of them. Pon farr being another.)

Kind of a side-effect of being such a long-running ship, though.

I mean, people have been writing fic about them for…well…it'll be 50 years soon. That's half a century of fic there so of course tropes get recycled. To be honest, I'm amazed that, even after all this time, people are still so enraptured by them together. Warms my heart.

Well...yeah. Reused tropes don't have to be a bad thing, though--I've seen original Pon farr fics just like I've seen original sex pollen fics.

I'm sure that Bones/Spock and Spock/Uhura fanfic use that trope as well & I guess it's a way to acknowledge his alieness and different culture. I agree that it shouldn't be overdone but I'm more bored by the bondamate thing, to be honest, or that whole vulcans kiss with their hands therefore everytime Spock touches them he's making out with 'em. Just no. Kiss is the human way then you have that vulcan kiss Sarek and Amanda showed but it's so specific the way it's done, that you can't mistake a normal touch or even holding hands for a vulcan kiss.

See, I kind of feel you, but tbh I'd be way more disappointed in a fandom that had that kind of opportunity for weird alien smut and never took it. Regular ol' human-style porn can be had in any fandom. Pon farr and mind melding are the kind of stuff the weird side of the internet was made for, and it warms my heart to know that so much of it is out there. XD I do hope you can find more fic that satisfies your tastes, though!
